Direct answer. Under PM Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), eligible BPL women receive a deposit-free LPG connection along with a free first refill and a free two-burner hotplate. To check your application status, contact your LPG distributor directly, call the Ujjwala helpline at 1800-266-6696, or use the status-check option on your Oil Marketing Company (OMC) portal: Bharat Gas, HP Gas, or the IndianOil customer portal.

What is PM Ujjwala Yojana?

PM Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) gives women from poor households a free LPG connection so they no longer have to cook on wood, dung-cake, or kerosene stoves. The scheme started in 2016 under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. By June 2026, over 10.6 crore connections have been released across India, making it one of the largest clean-cooking programmes in the world.

PMUY 2.0 expanded the scheme further. Migrant workers who cannot produce a local address proof can now apply using a self-declaration. The portal target rose to 9.6 crore connections, and urban households with no prior LPG connection became eligible alongside rural ones.

This article covers the new-connection process and status check. If you already have an Ujjwala connection and want to track your refill subsidy credit, see LPG subsidy status check for the DBTL (Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG) flow.

Who Can Apply?

All three of the following conditions must be met:

  • The applicant is a woman aged 18 years or above.
  • No existing LPG connection from any OMC (IndianOil, Bharat Gas, or HP Gas) in the household.
  • The household belongs to a poor family. The applicant submits a “deprivation declaration” confirming this; no BPL card is mandatory.

PMUY 2.0 specifically allows migrant workers to submit a self-declaration (Annexure I) in place of a local address proof and ration card. This means women living away from their home state are not excluded.

What Do You Get?

The scheme provides a complete, deposit-free LPG connection package. Based on information on pmuy.gov.in, the government covers:

  • Security deposit for the cylinder
  • Domestic pressure regulator
  • LPG hose pipe
  • Consumer card and installation charges

In addition to this package, all PMUY beneficiaries receive their first LPG refill and a two-burner hotplate (stove) free of cost at the time of connection.

The cash assistance amount varies by cylinder size. As published on pmuy.gov.in/about.html, the government provides Rs. 1,600 for a 14.2 kg cylinder connection and Rs. 1,150 for a 5 kg cylinder connection; verify the current figure directly on the portal before applying, as amounts are revised periodically.

Ongoing refill subsidy: Ujjwala beneficiaries receive a subsidy on LPG refills through the DBTL mechanism, which transfers the subsidy amount directly to the linked bank account after each purchase. The per-cylinder subsidy amount is set by the government and changes with market prices; check your LPG subsidy status or your bank passbook to confirm the latest credit.

Documents Required

Gather these before visiting the distributor or applying online:

  1. KYC application form (available at the distributor or OMC portal)
  2. Aadhaar card of the applicant (and adult family members)
  3. Proof of address (ration card, state government document, or self-declaration for migrants)
  4. Proof of family composition (ration card or equivalent)
  5. Bank account details (passbook copy or cancelled cheque)
  6. A deprivation declaration confirming poor household status

Your Aadhaar must be linked to your bank account for the subsidy to reach you via DBT. If your Aadhaar is not yet linked, see Aadhaar bank seeding status to complete the seeding before applying.

How to Apply for a New PMUY Connection

Option 1: Apply online

Each OMC has its own portal:

  • Bharat Gas: my.ebharatgas.com - select “Ujjwala New Connection” and upload documents
  • HP Gas: myhpgas.in - select “Ujjwala Beneficiary Connection” and follow the steps
  • IndianOil (Indane): Visit the IndianOil customer portal; search for an Ujjwala application option or proceed offline

On successful submission, you receive a reference number. Keep it for tracking.

Option 2: Apply offline

Visit any LPG distributor of your choice, collect the KYC form, and submit it along with your documents. The distributor verifies documents and processes the connection request. You do not need to go to the distributor of your current area; PMUY 2.0 lets you choose any distributor.

How to Check Your Application Status

Once you have applied, here are the ways to track progress:

1. Through the OMC portal:

  • Bharat Gas: Go to my.ebharatgas.com/CheckStatus, enter your Request ID and date of birth, then verify with an OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  • HP Gas: Go to myhpgas.in/CheckStatus and enter your reference number from the time of application.
  • IndianOil: Use the customer portal or contact your distributor with your application reference number.

2. Call the Ujjwala helpline:

Dial 1800-266-6696 (toll-free, Ujjwala-specific). Give the operator your reference number and the registered mobile number. The helpline can tell you whether your application is under processing, approved, or pending documents.

For general LPG emergencies, call 1906. For broader MOPNG-related queries, reach MOPNG E-seva at mopnge-seva.in.

3. Visit your distributor:

If you applied offline or do not have a reference number, visit the distributor where you applied. They can look up your status using your Aadhaar or mobile number.

4. Check via DBT or bank:

Once your connection is approved and the first refill is credited, you will also see the subsidy amount in your linked bank account. If DBT credits are not appearing, see DBT money not credited - how to fix for troubleshooting steps.

After Your Connection is Approved

The distributor delivers the cylinder, regulator, hose, free hotplate, and DGCC safety booklet. Your first refill comes already filled at no cost. Future refills are booked via the distributor's app, SMS, or OMC portal. The subsidy on each refill goes to your Aadhaar-linked bank account after booking. If your Aadhaar status is unclear, check Aadhaar status before delivery - a mismatch can delay the DBT credit.

Common Reasons for Rejection or Delay

  • An existing LPG connection in the household (including one in a family member's name at the same address)
  • Aadhaar not linked to the bank account, blocking DBT
  • Document mismatch between Aadhaar and ration card
  • Applicant under 18 years of age
  • Incomplete KYC form or low-quality scanned documents (for online applications)

If your application is rejected, the OMC must give a reason. You can re-apply after resolving the discrepancy.

Ujjwala Connection vs. LPG Refill Subsidy

PMUY gives a one-time deposit-free connection with a free first refill and stove. The ongoing DBTL refill subsidy is separate and continues after the connection is active. Do not confuse the two: the Ujjwala benefit is the connection itself; the DBTL credit is the per-refill subsidy. To track refill credits, see LPG subsidy status.

FAQ

Do I need a ration card to apply for PMUY 2.0?

A ration card is not compulsory. You need a document showing family composition - a ration card, a state government certificate, or a self-declaration (for migrants). Aadhaar and a deprivation declaration are the core requirements.

Can a migrant worker apply for Ujjwala Yojana at her current city?

Yes. PMUY 2.0 allows migrant applicants to submit a self-declaration (Annexure I format) as proof of address and family composition instead of a ration card. You can choose any distributor in the city you are currently living in.

Is the hotplate (stove) really free, or is it deducted later?

The hotplate is genuinely free. The government provides the two-burner stove as part of the PMUY connection package with no deduction from the applicant. This is confirmed on pmuy.gov.in/faq.

How long does the application process take?

Processing time varies by OMC and distributor workload. After document verification, delivery typically happens within a few weeks. Contact your distributor or call 1800-266-6696 if there is no update after 30 days.

What if there is already a connection in my husband's name at the same address?

You are not eligible in that case. PMUY requires that no LPG connection from any OMC exists in the household. If the connection is active, the application will be rejected.

My DBT subsidy is not coming to my account after booking a refill. What do I do?

First, confirm your Aadhaar is linked to your bank account and the bank account is linked to your LPG consumer ID. See Aadhaar bank seeding status and DBT money not credited - fix guide. You can also check your Jan Dhan or savings account via Jan Dhan DBT status.

Can I transfer my PMUY connection if I move to another city?

Yes. LPG connections can be transferred to a distributor in another city. Visit the new city's distributor with your consumer card and a new address proof. The PMUY benefit (already received at connection) does not transfer again, but your connection record moves with you.

How do I complain if the distributor refuses to give me the free stove or first refill?

File a complaint on MOPNG E-seva or call 1800-266-6696. If unresolved, file an RTI as described below.
