Quick summary: The authority is the EPFO (Employees Provident Fund Organisation). Check your claim on the EPFO member portal using your UAN and password, or on the UMANG app under Employee Centric Services. You need an activated UAN with seeded KYC. EPFO never charges a fee for this and never asks for your OTP.

What an EPF claim and its status mean

EPF, or भविष्य निधि, is your provident fund built from monthly salary deductions. When you ask EPFO for money or a transfer, you file a claim. The status tells you where that claim has reached.

There are a few common claim types. A full withdrawal closes the account, often after you leave a job. A partial advance lets you take part of the balance for needs like illness, housing or marriage. A transfer moves your old balance into your new employer account.

KYC matters because EPFO settles money only when your Aadhaar, bank account and PAN are verified against your UAN. If KYC is missing or mismatched, the claim can be returned or rejected. So confirm your KYC is approved before you file.

How to check EPF claim status

Step 1 — Track the claim on the EPFO member portal

Open the member portal at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in. Log in with your UAN, password and the captcha shown.

Click Online Services in the top menu. Select Track Claim Status from the list. The page shows your claim or tracking ID, the form type and the current status.

You can also check the status without logging in. Visit passbook.epfindia.gov.in/MemClaimStatusUAN and enter your UAN to see recent claims.

Step 2 — Use UMANG or the EPFO passbook

Install the UMANG app and log in with your UAN-linked mobile number using an OTP or MPIN. Open Employee Centric Services, then choose Track Claim to view your EPF claim status.

To confirm money has credited, open the EPFO passbook at passbook.epfindia.gov.in. A settled withdrawal shows a debit entry once the payment is processed.

Details you may need and what each status means

Keep these handy before you check or follow up.

Detail Why it is needed
UAN (12 digits) To log in and track the claim
Member portal password To access Online Services
UAN-linked mobile number For OTP login on portal and UMANG
Claim or tracking ID To quote when you follow up
Bank account and IFSC The account where settlement is sent

The status labels you commonly see are explained below.

Status What it usually means
Under Process EPFO has received the claim and is verifying it; not yet approved or paid
Approved The claim has been approved and payment is being arranged
Settled The claim is cleared and the amount is sent to your bank account
Rejected The claim was declined; a reason is usually shown
Returned The claim was sent back, often for a correction in details

If a status word on your screen differs, read the exact remark shown and confirm on the portal.

If your claim is stuck or rejected

First, read the reason on the Track Claim Status page. Most rejections and returns are due to KYC mismatch, wrong bank details, an unverified date of exit, or a name mismatch.

Fix the flagged detail, get it approved by your employer or EPFO, and file a fresh claim. Do not file repeatedly without correcting the cause, as that simply repeats the rejection.

If the claim sits unchanged for a long time with no reason, raise a complaint on the EPFO grievance portal, EPFiGMS, at epfigms.gov.in. Quote your UAN and claim ID.

Using RTI to escalate a delay

If a grievance brings no answer, you can use the Right to Information Act, 2005 to ask EPFO for the status and reasons on record. An RTI to the Public Information Officer of your EPFO regional office must be answered, normally within 30 days under Section 7(1).

Our RTI-angle guides walk you through this for EPF matters. See RTI for an EPF withdrawal delay and using RTI to get your EPFO claim status.

You can build a ready-to-send application with the RTI Drafter.

Safety warnings

EPFO charges no fee to check status, file a claim, or download documents. Any person or website asking for money to do this is a fraud. Avoid agents who promise to speed up your claim.

Never share your UAN password or OTP with anyone. EPFO will never call or message you asking for an OTP. Use only the official epfindia.gov.in portals and the genuine UMANG app.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an EPF claim take to settle?

EPFO does not publish a guaranteed settlement time, and it varies with claim type and verification. Track the live status on the member portal or UMANG instead of relying on a fixed estimate. If it stays Under Process much longer than your past claims, raise a grievance on EPFiGMS quoting your claim ID.

Can I check claim status without logging in?

Yes. Open the EPFO claim status service at passbook.epfindia.gov.in and enter your UAN to see your recent claims. For full details, including the form type and any reason for return, log in to the member portal. The UMANG app also shows status once your mobile number is linked to your UAN.

My status shows Settled but I have no money. What now?

A Settled status means EPFO has sent the payment to your bank. Bank credit through NEFT can take a little time to reflect, so check your passbook and bank statement. If the amount does not arrive, confirm your bank account and IFSC on your UAN are correct, then raise a grievance on EPFiGMS with your claim ID.

Why was my EPF claim rejected or returned?

Common reasons are KYC not verified, a mismatch in name or date of birth, wrong bank details, or an unconfirmed date of exit. The exact reason is shown on the Track Claim Status page. Correct the flagged item, get it approved, then file a fresh claim. See our guides on rejected and pending claims for step-by-step fixes.

Do I need an activated UAN to track my claim?

Yes. You need an activated UAN with KYC such as Aadhaar, bank account and PAN seeded against it. Without activation you cannot log in to the member portal or use UMANG. If your UAN is not active, activate it first, then track your claim. See our guide on recovering and activating your UAN.
