Direct answer. Submit a Change/Correction application online at Protean (tinpan.proteantech.in) or UTIITSL (pan.utiitsl.com) with supporting documents for the field you want to change. Address update via Aadhaar eKYC is free. All other corrections carry a fee; verify the current amount on the portal before paying. Why correction, not a new PAN
Every Indian resident has exactly one PAN. Section 272B of the Income-tax Act levies a penalty of Rs.10,000 for holding more than one PAN. So when your name is mis-spelt, your date of birth is wrong, or your photograph is outdated, you correct the existing PAN record, you do not apply for a fresh one.
The existing `pan-card-new` article on this wiki covers documents for a first-time PAN application. This article covers what you do after you already have a PAN but the data on it is wrong or the physical card is lost.
What changed from 1 April 2026
The Income-tax Act 2025 replaced the Income-tax Act 1961 with effect from 1 April 2026. Rule 158 of the Income-tax Rules 2026 now governs the documents required for PAN. The old Form 49A, Form 49AA, and the pre-April Change Request form were discontinued after 31 March 2026. Both authorised service providers, Protean and UTIITSL, now accept only the revised forms under the new rules.
If you applied before 31 March 2026 and your application is still pending, the providers were directed by CBDT to close all discrepancy-pending applications by 30 March 2026. You may need to file a fresh application.
Two authorised portals, one outcome
The Income Tax Department has authorised only two entities to receive and process PAN applications and correction requests:
- Protean eGov Technologies (formerly NSDL-eGov): tinpan.proteantech.in
- UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services (UTIITSL): pan.utiitsl.com
No other website or agent is authorised. Both portals lead to the same PAN database maintained by the Income Tax Department. You can use either one.
Three types of request
| Request type | What it covers | Fee (verify on portal) |
|---|---|---|
| Change/Correction | Name, DOB, gender, photo, signature; any field except the PAN number itself | Around Rs.107 (physical + e-PAN, Indian address); around Rs.72 (e-PAN only); confirm current rate before paying |
| Reprint (no data change) | Lost/damaged card; no field change needed | Rs.50 (Indian address); Rs.959 (foreign address) |
| Address update via Aadhaar eKYC | Communication address linked to Aadhaar | Free (UTIITSL portal) |
Note on fees: The correction fee is not separately listed on the portals from the new-application fee. The figures above (Rs.107/Rs.72) are sourced from UTIITSL's published fee notice (in force from 16 June 2018) and are likely to apply to correction requests as well. Verify the exact amount displayed on the payment screen before proceeding, as fees can change.
Documents you need for each type of correction
Under Rule 158 of the Income-tax Rules 2026 (Form No. F93), the document categories are proof of identity (POI), proof of address (POA), and proof of date of birth (PODOB). You need to upload the relevant category for the field you are correcting.
Name correction (including spelling error or change after marriage/gazette):
- Gazette notification (mandatory for a legal name change)
- Marriage certificate (for change due to marriage)
- Aadhaar card (if the corrected name already reflects in Aadhaar)
- Any valid POI: Indian passport, driving licence, or voter ID
Date of birth correction:
- Birth certificate issued by a municipal or Panchayat authority, or by the Registrar of Births and Deaths
- Matriculation certificate
- Indian passport (also serves as PODOB)
- Marriage certificate (for married ladies, as corroboration)
- Affidavit sworn before a magistrate (only if no other PODOB is available)
Photo or signature update:
- The online form lets you upload a fresh photograph; no separate document is required for a photo change alone
- For a signature change, the signed form itself serves as the specimen
Address update (free via Aadhaar eKYC):
- No documents to upload; verification happens through Aadhaar OTP
Step-by-step: how to file online
- Go to tinpan.proteantech.in or pan.utiitsl.com.
- Select Change/Correction in existing PAN data (or the equivalent option under the revised 2026 interface).
- Enter your existing 10-character PAN, date of birth, and registered mobile or email for OTP verification.
- Fill the online form. Tick only the fields you want to change. Tick the wrong field and you may create a mismatch in tax records.
- Upload scanned copies of supporting documents (PDF or JPEG, usually under 300 KB each).
- Choose physical card + e-PAN, or e-PAN only.
- Pay online by debit card, credit card, or net banking.
- Save the 15-digit acknowledgement number. This is your tracking reference.
- Your updated card will be dispatched to your registered communication address. Download your e-PAN from the same portal once the application is processed.
Reprint when data is already correct
If your PAN data is correct in the Income Tax Department's records but your physical card is lost, damaged, or faded, choose the Reprint PAN Card option on either portal. The fee is Rs.50 for an Indian address. No documents are required; the system verifies your identity via OTP on your registered mobile or email.
Holders of Instant e-PAN (obtained free through the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal) can also apply for a physical card reprint through UTIITSL or can apply for change/correction via the eKYC mode on UTIITSL.
Downloading your e-PAN
An e-PAN is a digitally signed PDF copy of your PAN card. It is a valid document under the Income Tax Department's own notification. You can download it from:
- UTIITSL portal: click Download e-PAN (available for dispatched-card cases and e-PAN issued cases)
- Protean portal: similar option under your application status
- Income Tax e-filing portal (www.incometax.gov.in): the Instant e-PAN service is a free Aadhaar-based allotment route for those without an existing PAN, not a correction channel; however, once your PAN is active you can download a copy of your e-PAN from your profile on the portal
The e-PAN download from UTIITSL is available without additional charge for those whose card was already dispatched or e-PAN was already issued. If you pay Rs.72 for e-PAN only (no physical card), the e-PAN is sent to your registered email.
Tracking your correction application
Use your 15-digit acknowledgement number on the same portal (Protean or UTIITSL) to track the status of your correction application. Alternatively, you can check the status of your income tax refund or TDS credit on the e-filing portal once the corrected PAN is active. Mismatches in name or DOB are a common reason for refund delays.
If your Aadhaar is linked to a bank account under the wrong PAN, check your Aadhaar bank seeding status after the correction to ensure the records are in sync.

Frequently asked questions
Can I correct my father's name on my PAN card?
Yes. Father's name is a correctable field. Upload your birth certificate or school leaving certificate that shows the correct father's name. Some portals also accept a gazette notification if the correction relates to an adoption or a legal change.
My correction application was rejected for insufficient documents. What now?
Log in with your acknowledgement number and check the discrepancy remark. Resubmit with the correct document. Do not file a fresh application or you risk accumulating duplicate references in the system.
I changed my name by gazette. Do I need to send the original gazette?
Online applications accept a scanned copy of the gazette notification. The original may be called for physical verification in rare cases. Keep it handy.
How long does a correction application take?
The portals do not publish a fixed turnaround time. Physical card dispatch typically takes a few working days to a few weeks depending on postal delivery. An e-PAN is usually available faster. If the status shows no movement after 15 days, contact the helpline with your acknowledgement number.
Is there a penalty for not correcting a wrong name on my PAN?
There is no specific penalty for an error in PAN data, but a name mismatch can cause income tax return mismatches, TDS credit failures, or bank account seeding rejections. See how to raise an income tax grievance if a mismatch has already caused a refund or TDS problem.
Can someone else file a correction on my behalf?
Yes. You can authorise a representative by providing a signed authorisation letter. The representative must bring their own identity proof along with yours if filing at a physical PAN service centre. Online, the OTP goes to your own registered mobile; the form must be filled by you or under your direct supervision.
What if the correction is needed in a company's or HUF's PAN?
The same portals handle corrections for non-individual PANs (companies, HUFs, firms, trusts). The document categories differ (certificate of incorporation, deed, etc.) under Rule 158 of the IT Rules 2026. The process and portal are the same.
File an RTI if the correction fails
File an RTI to: the Income Tax Department / the PAN service provider
- What is the current status of my correction application (acknowledgement number: [X])? What is the reason for the delay or rejection?
- What documents were found deficient in my application, and what is the prescribed document list under Rule 158 of the Income-tax Rules 2026 for my category?
- Has the corrected PAN data been updated in the Income Tax Department's central database? On what date was it updated?
- Has the service provider (Protean/UTIITSL) returned the application fee or acknowledged the error on their side? On what date?
- What is the internal escalation mechanism and the name and address of the appellate authority for PAN-related disputes?
