eCourts + Judicial Transparency — All Guides (2026) — RTI Wiki

Quick Reply: Forty guides covering High Court case status, the eCourts services portal, certified copies, Lok Adalat, mediation and RTI in courts. Track a case free by CNR or party name; use RTI for the court's administrative side.

40 eCourts + judicial guides — High Court case-status, Supreme Court tracking, RTI for court records, NJDG, ADR (Lok Adalat + mediation), witness protection, POCSO fast-track. Each ends with RTI escalation route.

The one distinction that decides everything here: courts run on two kinds of records. Judicial records — the case file, orders, judgments, pleadings — are governed by the court's own rules: you get them through the certified-copy counter, not through an RTI application. Administrative records — vacancies, infrastructure spending, listing logic, asset disclosures, appointments — are ordinary information held by a public authority, and the Supreme Court has itself been held to be one under the RTI Act (CPIO, Supreme Court of India v. Subhash Chandra Agarwal, 2019). Get this split right and neither the counter nor the PIO can send you away.

When your question is "why is it stuck"

Delay questions split the same two ways. If the case is awaiting listing or an order is reserved, the answer usually lies in board congestion and judicial time — visible in NJDG numbers, not obtainable by RTI. If the question concerns administration — why a post has been vacant, why the copy branch took months, how records are digitised, what a court spent — that is RTI territory, addressed to the Registrar or the court's PIO, with the 30-day clock of Section 7(1) running.

Frequently asked questions

Is a downloaded order the same as a certified copy?

No. A download is information; a certified copy is proof. Appeals, banks and registries ask for the certified version, stamped by the copying branch of the court that issued the order.

Can I get another party's case file through RTI?

The judicial file follows court rules and is obtained by parties through their advocate. What RTI reaches is the court's administration — the statistics, the spending, the vacancies — not someone else's pending litigation.

What is a CNR number and where do I find it?

It is the 16-character Case Number Record the eCourts network assigns to every case. It appears on cause lists, order sheets and the summons; with it, the status search works across name changes and transfers.

Stuck? File an RTI

Every page above ends with an RTI escalation template for court grievances. Most case-status / certificate / vacancy queries clear within 15 days of an RTI being filed to the right office — the template's five questions ask for status, officer, reasons, file movement and the likely date, which is exactly the record an administration cannot pretend not to have.
