Widow pension in India: eligibility and State guide
Quick answer: India does not have one widow-pension amount, age rule, income limit, document list or portal for every applicant. First identify the scheme administered by your State or Union Territory. The central NSAP component, IGNWPS, currently supports eligible BPL widows aged 40–79 at Rs 300 a month and those aged 80 or above at Rs 500; States add top-ups or run wider schemes. Apply through the current State authority and keep a dated acknowledgement.
The old version of this page presented a precise 28-State rate table without a current primary source for every row. That is unsafe: State rates, names, coverage and portals change independently. This guide gives the verified central baseline, a finder for named State schemes and official portals, and a method to locate and prove the exact State rule that applies to you.
For the central application track see apply for IGNWPS. For a payment that has already been sanctioned, start with widow pension status and RTI when widow pension is not credited.
The two layers you must separate
| Layer | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme (IGNWPS) under NSAP | Central assistance for eligible widows from BPL households under the published age bands | A universal total pension paid at the same rate in every State |
| State/UT widow or destitute-women pension | State top-up, expanded eligibility or a separate State-funded scheme | Proof that another State's age, income or document rule applies to you |
The Ministry of Rural Development's current official NSAP statement lists IGNWPS central assistance as Rs 300 for BPL widows aged 40–79 and Rs 500 for BPL widows aged 80 and above. A later July 2026 Ministry reply confirms that the central rates had not been revised and explains that State/UT top-ups and separate social pensions vary.
Therefore, never tell an applicant “widow pension is Rs X across India”. Ask for the State's current total, its central and State components, and the government order effective for the relevant period. Old-age NSAP is a different scheme; see old-age pension under NSAP.
Widow pension eligibility age
There is no single all-India starting age. Searches for widow pension eligibility age mix two rules:
- IGNWPS (central baseline): BPL widows aged 40–79 for the Rs 300 band, and 80 and above for the Rs 500 band, as currently published by the Ministry of Rural Development.
- State schemes: many States cover widows from 18, some keep a higher floor, and some move a beneficiary from a widow scheme to an old-age scheme at 60 or 80. A State may also exclude remarriage, require a domicile period, or use an income / BPL test that is not the central BPL list.
Verify the age, income and remarriage clauses on the current State government order, not on a social-media poster. If the death certificate, Aadhaar date of birth and application form disagree, that is a record-correction issue before eligibility, not a reason to alter a scan.
How to find the correct State scheme
Use this order:
- Search the official State Social Welfare, Women and Child Development, Rural Development or pension department website.
- Check the State e-District/ServicePlus portal or the service link exposed by the department.
- Ask the Gram Panchayat, municipality, Block office, tehsil or district social-welfare office which authority sanctions applications at your address.
- Obtain the current government order/guideline, application form and document checklist.
- Confirm whether the application is under IGNWPS, a State top-up, or a separate State pension.
ServicePlus is an official government service-delivery platform used by participating authorities, but not every State widow-pension service is necessarily available there. If a State department links to another official portal, use that route. RTI for a State widow pension is the records route when the office will not name the scheme.
Before trusting a page, confirm that the domain belongs to the government authority, the scheme name matches the form, and the guideline has a current effective date. A “beneficiary list” website with ads is not a source of law or payment status.
Named State schemes and official portals (finder, not a rate table)
Use this as a starting map. Amounts, income caps and age bands are omitted on purpose; copy them only from the current GO or the live service page.
| State / UT | Common scheme name(s) to search | Official starting portal (verify before use) |
|---|---|---|
| All-India (central component) | Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme (IGNWPS) under NSAP | nsap.nic.in / NSAP department pages |
| Rajasthan | Mukhyamantri Ekalnari Samman Pension / State social-security widow pension | sso.rajasthan.gov.in, sje.rajasthan.gov.in |
| Delhi | Widow Pension Scheme (Social Welfare) | edistrict.delhigovt.nic.in |
| Maharashtra | IGNWPS plus Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Anudan Yojana (State destitute cover, including many widows) | sjsa.maharashtra.gov.in |
| Uttar Pradesh | State Vidhwa Pension Yojana / NSAP widow component | State Social Welfare / e-District service listed on the UP government domain |
| Karnataka | Destitute Widow Pension / social-security pension | State Seva Sindhu / Social Welfare service page |
| Tamil Nadu | Destitute Widow Pension Scheme | State eSevai / TNeGA service listed on a tn.gov.in domain |
| Telangana | Aasara / State social-security pension (widow category where notified) | State Aasara / service portal on a telangana.gov.in domain |
| Kerala | State social-security / NSAP widow pension | State Social Security Mission / e-District |
| Gujarat | State widow / destitute-women pension (search the current GO name) | digital Gujarat / Social Justice service page |
| Haryana | Financial assistance to widows / State social-security pension | Saral / Social Justice service on a haryana.gov.in domain |
| Andhra Pradesh | State pension (widow category under the current GO name) | State pension / navasakam-style portal on an ap.gov.in domain |
| West Bengal | State social-security / women income-support schemes as notified | State .gov.in pension or e-District page — do not use an ads site |
If the officer quotes a different official name, write that name on your rule card. Maharashtra’s department page for IGNWPS also notes that a widow may receive the central IGNWPS component and a State destitute-women pension where she separately qualifies; that is a two-scheme question, not automatic double payment.
Build a State rule card before applying
Fill this table from the official notification or service page:
| Question | Your verified State answer | Source/order |
|---|---|---|
| Exact scheme name | ||
| Administering and sanctioning authority | ||
| Minimum/maximum age | ||
| Income, BPL or exclusion rule | ||
| Residence/domicile condition | ||
| Remarriage or other continuing-eligibility condition | ||
| Monthly amount and central/State components | ||
| Application channel | ||
| Required documents | ||
| Review/appeal or grievance route |
This protects you from mixing the rules of similarly named schemes. It also lets you challenge an objection with the exact order instead of a social-media poster.
Document checklist: start broad, then follow the State form
Usually asked (confirm on the State form):
- applicant identity and age proof (Aadhaar, birth record, or the alternative the State allows);
- current State residence/domicile proof;
- spouse's death certificate under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, or the alternative certification allowed by the State;
- marriage/spouse-link record where required (helpful when surnames differ);
- income/BPL/ration or socio-economic record required by the scheme;
- beneficiary bank or post-office account details (first page with IFSC);
- photograph and mobile/contact details; and
- self-declarations about remarriage, other pension or exclusions where the scheme requires them.
Often State-specific:
- Tehsildar income certificate for the current financial year (income-ceiling States);
- BPL / priority household ration record (BPL-gated schemes);
- no-remarriage certificate from Gram Panchayat where the form still asks for it;
- inquest, post-mortem or Magistrate report if the death was unnatural and the death certificate is disputed;
- children’s school records only if the scheme pays a higher rate for dependants;
- disability certificate if the widow herself is applying for a combined or higher disability-linked pension — see disability pension application.
These are not a universal mandatory list. The Ministry's NSAP materials have encouraged States to simplify certification and use authorised alternatives where documents are unavailable. Ask the State authority for that alternative rather than paying for a fabricated certificate.
If the death occurred abroad, the death record generally needs consular attestation or apostille before a State registrar or welfare office will treat it as a local death certificate. Check spelling and dates across the applicant's identity, death certificate, bank account and scheme form. A mismatch in the deceased spouse's name is a record-correction issue, not a reason to alter a scan.
Photocopy the set in duplicate, self-attest, submit one set, and keep the second with the acknowledgement. That is your evidence if the file is misplaced.
Widow pension apply online
Widow pension apply online is a State-service search, not a single national form. After you have the scheme name from the finder above:
- Open only a .gov.in service (ServicePlus, e-District, SSO, Seva Sindhu, eSevai, or the department URL printed on the GO).
- Create or use the State login the portal actually requires (often Aadhaar OTP). Do not share the OTP with a cyber-café operator who refuses to show the government receipt.
- Select the exact service name that matches the GO (widow / destitute woman / NSAP IGNWPS), not a neighbouring old-age or disability service.
- Upload the checklist documents in the file type and size the form states. Keep the application PDF and the auto-generated number.
- If the portal offers only “apply at CSC / e-Mitra / Gram Panchayat”, that is the official channel for that State — do not treat a third-party “apply now” site as a shortcut.
Offline remains valid where the GO says so: Block / Taluka social-welfare counter or District Social Welfare Office. Insist on a signed, dated inward number.
Apply and preserve an auditable trail
1. Submit to the designated authority
Use the official online service, Gram Panchayat/municipal counter, Block or district office specified by the State. Avoid an operator who refuses to show the government receipt.
2. Keep the complete submitted version
Save the filled application, every attachment, application/reference number and submission timestamp. For physical filing, obtain a stamped copy or inward number.
3. Record verification visits or calls
Note the official's name/designation, date and documents checked. Do not pay an unofficial “verification fee”. Ask for a receipt for any government fee actually published. Be present for field verification with originals; an absence note is a common silent rejection.
4. Distinguish selection from sanction and payment
An application can be received, verified, approved, sanctioned and paid at different times. Save the exact status at each stage and the sanction/payment reference when available.
5. Recheck continuing obligations
Some schemes require periodic verification, life certification or reporting of changed circumstances. Follow the State's current instruction. For digital life certificates see Jeevan Pramaan / life certificate. Do not assume that every missed credit means a fresh application is required.
Widow pension status check
Widow pension status check is three different lookups. Use the one that matches the stage:
- Application pending: the State service acknowledgement / e-District status, or a written enquiry with the inward number at the Block or DSWO office.
- Sanctioned beneficiary: NSAP beneficiary search on the current NSAP portal where the State still uploads IGNWPS data, plus the State pension / PPO / beneficiary-report page (Rajasthan pension.rajasthan.gov.in-style reports, UP SSP, and similar .gov.in tools).
- Payment failed or missing: the sanction order, beneficiary ID, last successful credit, then PFMS Know Your Payment if the payment is on that rail. Also see PFMS payment status and pension not credited — what to do.
Absence on PFMS does not prove the State never issued the pension. Some States use their own treasury. A DBT credit that landed in the wrong Aadhaar-seeded account is a seeding problem — wrong Aadhaar-linked bank account.
If the application is rejected
Ask for a written order stating:
- the scheme and provision applied;
- the fact found against eligibility;
- the document treated as missing or invalid;
- the authority that decided; and
- the correction, review or appeal route.
Common issues include a wrong scheme, age or income threshold, residence mismatch, non-matching death/identity record, duplicate pension entry, bank failure or an uncommunicated deficiency. Each requires a different response.
Do not accept “family member earns” or “name not in list” as a complete reason unless the authority identifies the applicable rule and record. If an income certificate is older than the validity printed on it, renew it and file the review — that is a document defect, not always a finding that you are ineligible.
If an approved pension is not credited
Collect the sanction order, beneficiary ID and last successful credit. Ask the scheme office for the payment period, payment instruction, treasury/PFMS reference and bank response. Check the bank account's active status and name match through the bank.
PFMS's Know Your Payment may help for payments visible in that system, but absence there does not prove the State never issued or rejected a pension. Follow the sanctioning office's recorded reference. For a spouse’s Atal Pension death claim, that is a different statute — APY death claim. For a work-injury widow pension under ESIC, see ESIC dependants’ benefit.
Do not claim that “80% of delays are Aadhaar mismatch” or that a bank will fix every case in 24 hours; no current primary source supports those promises.
Grievance and RTI escalation
Submit a written grievance to the sanctioning/local authority, then the district and State nodal level shown in the scheme. Include the application, status, rejection/sanction and payment evidence. Use CPGRAMS (how to file a CPGRAMS grievance) only where the current portal accepts the concerned Central/State organisation and issue; it is not a substitute for a State statutory appeal.
For a public authority, RTI can seek:
- date-wise application movement;
- verification and eligibility report;
- deficiency notice and proof of communication;
- sanction/rejection order;
- beneficiary-list entry and selection record concerning the applicant;
- payment instruction and return/failure response; and
- the current scheme guideline, State top-up order and grievance procedure.
RTI does not decide eligibility, award arrears or compel payment. Use the records in the scheme's review, grievance or legal route. RTI Assistant helps draft the request; The RTI Playbook explains how to appeal missing file records.

Eight practical FAQs
Is there one national widow-pension application?
No. IGNWPS is a central-assistance component implemented through States/UTs, while States also add or run schemes. Apply through the authority and form notified for your place.
Is every widow eligible from age 18?
No universal rule applies. The current IGNWPS central baseline begins at 40 for BPL widows, while a State scheme may have different coverage. Verify the State order.
Is Rs 300 the total monthly pension everywhere?
No. Rs 300 is the current central IGNWPS assistance for the 40–79 band. State top-ups and separate State schemes change the total.
What happens at age 80 under IGNWPS?
The current central assistance shown for eligible BPL widows aged 80 and above is Rs 500. Confirm how the State system transitions or classifies the beneficiary.
Can a divorced or separated woman use IGNWPS?
IGNWPS is described for widows. A State may have another destitute-women scheme covering different marital circumstances. Search that State's official schemes rather than relabelling status.
Is a joint bank account always accepted?
Follow the State payment rule and bank requirement. Some benefit systems require an account in the beneficiary's name. Obtain the current written instruction before changing accounts.
Does approval guarantee credit by a fixed day each month?
No nationwide monthly credit date was verified. Payment calendars and fund releases vary. Use the State order and the applicant's payment reference.
Can RTI secure arrears automatically?
No. RTI can reveal the sanction period, stopped-payment reason and records. Arrears depend on the scheme decision and any applicable review or legal remedy.
