Driving Licence Status and Renewal 2026

Driving Licence Status and Renewal 2026, RTI Wiki citizen guide

Quick answer. Check your driving licence status free on Sarathi (sarathi.parivahan.gov.in) using your DL number and date of birth. To renew, log in, pick “DL Renewal”, fill Form 9, upload documents and pay online. Renew within 30 days of expiry to keep continuity and avoid penalty.

Think of your driving licence as having a clock on it. This guide walks that clock forward, from the day you check the status to the day a renewed licence lands in your DigiLocker. Follow the stages in order and you will rarely need to visit an RTO at all.

Stage 1: Check where your licence stands today

Before anything else, find out what the system says about you. Open the official Sarathi portal at sarathi.parivahan.gov.in, choose your state, and you reach the driving licence services menu.

Two different checks live here, so pick the right one.

Know Your Licence Details

Use this to see an existing licence. Enter your DL number and date of birth, type the captcha, and the portal shows your status, the issuing RTO, the vehicle classes you hold and, most importantly, the expiry date. Write that date down. The whole renewal timeline hangs on it.

Application Status

If you have already applied for a renewal or a duplicate, use “Application Status” with your application number and date of birth to track its progress. This is the screen you will return to in Stage 4.

Both checks are free and run 24×7. You can also pull a digital copy of your licence through Sarathi, the mParivahan app or DigiLocker, which is handy when a traffic officer asks for it.

Stage 2: Know your validity clock

How long your licence lasts is fixed by Section 14 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, not by the RTO clerk. For a private (non-transport) licence the validity depends on your age when it was issued or last renewed:

  • Issued before you turned 30: valid until you reach age 40.
  • Issued at age 30 to under 50: valid for 10 years.
  • Issued at age 50 to under 55: valid until you reach age 60.
  • Issued at age 55 or above: valid for 5 years.

A transport (commercial) licence works on a shorter clock: it stays effective for 5 years, and only 3 years if you carry dangerous or hazardous goods. That is why commercial drivers renew far more often than car owners.

Knowing your band tells you when the clock runs out, so you can act before it does.

Stage 3: Renew online, ideally before the clock stops

You do not have to wait for expiry. You can begin renewal in advance, and a timely renewal takes effect the day after your current licence ends, so your driving history stays unbroken.

Fill Form 9 on Sarathi

On the driving licence menu select “Apply for DL Renewal”. The portal opens Form 9, the renewal application. Your existing details load automatically once you enter your DL number and date of birth. Check every field, because a wrong address or class here becomes a wrong renewed licence.

Attach the fitness paperwork

This is the step most people miss.

  • If you are under 40 and renewing a private licence, you usually attach Form 1, a self-declaration that you are physically fit.
  • If you are 40 or older, or you hold any commercial licence, you must attach Form 1A, a medical certificate signed by a registered doctor. Many RTOs want it dated within about a month, so get it close to the application day.

Pay and choose your route

Upload your photo and proof of age and address, then pay the fee online. The renewal fee plus smart-card charge is set under Rule 32 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, but states add their own charges, so the exact total differs by state. Read the amount shown on the Sarathi payment screen before you confirm, and verify the current figure on sarathi.parivahan.gov.in rather than relying on an old number.

Where your state supports it, you can pick “Submit via Aadhaar Authentication” for a faceless renewal: an OTP goes to your Aadhaar-linked mobile, your details and photo sync automatically, and you skip the RTO visit entirely.

Stage 4: If the clock already stopped

Missed the date? The rule that governs this is Rule 18 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, and the 30-day mark is the line that matters.

Within 30 days of expiry

Renew inside this grace window and your licence is renewed with effect from the date it expired. There is no penalty and no driving test. Treat these 30 days as a buffer, not a free pass, because driving on an expired licence is still an offence.

More than 30 days late

Past the grace window, the renewed licence takes effect from the date of renewal, not the old expiry, so your continuity breaks. You also pay an additional fee for the delay; states commonly levy a charge for each year of lateness, so confirm the exact figure on the Sarathi payment page. If the gap stretches beyond a year, expect to submit Form 1A and possibly sit a fresh driving test. Very long lapses are harder still, and some RTOs treat them almost like a fresh application, so speak to your RTO first.

If your licence is lost rather than expired, that is a different fix; see our guide on a duplicate RC and DL before you renew.

Process flow for Driving Licence Status and Renewal 2026

Figure: step-by-step flow. If a step stalls, use the grievance or RTI route shown.

Stage 5: Track approval and download

After you submit, go back to “Application Status” on Sarathi and watch it move through verification. Once it reads approved, download the renewed PDF and save it to mParivahan and DigiLocker.

If the status sits frozen, gets marked rejected, or no one responds within the stated timeline, do not keep refreshing. Raise a grievance on the national CPGRAMS portal at pgportal.gov.in, or file an RTI to the Public Information Officer of your RTO asking for the file status and the reason for delay. A dated RTI usually moves a stuck file faster than repeated calls.

While the renewal is in progress, keep your other paperwork clean too. Clear any pending fines using our check and pay eChallan guide, since unresolved offences can complicate verification.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my driving licence status for free?

Open Sarathi at sarathi.parivahan.gov.in, choose your state, and use “Know Your Licence Details” with your DL number and date of birth. It shows your status, RTO and expiry date at no cost, 24 hours a day.

Can I renew my driving licence before it expires?

Yes. You can start renewal in advance on Sarathi. A renewal made on time takes effect the day after your current licence ends, so your driving history stays continuous and you avoid the rush near the expiry date.

What is the grace period to renew an expired licence?

You get 30 days after expiry. Renew inside this window and the licence is renewed from the original expiry date with no penalty or test. Remember that actually driving on the expired licence during these days is still illegal.

When do I need a Form 1A medical certificate?

You need Form 1A if you are 40 or older renewing a private licence, or if you hold any commercial (transport) licence. Younger private drivers usually attach Form 1, a self-declaration of fitness. Keep the certificate recently dated.

How much does driving licence renewal cost in 2026?

The renewal fee plus smart-card charge is set under Rule 32 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, but states add their own charges, so the total varies. Late renewal adds a delay fee. Verify the exact amount on the Sarathi payment screen before paying.

Do I have to take a driving test again to renew?

Not if you renew on time or within the 30-day grace period. If your licence has been expired for more than a year, the RTO may ask for Form 1A and a fresh driving test. Very long lapses can be treated almost like a new application.

My renewal application is stuck or rejected. What can I do?

First check “Application Status” on Sarathi for the reason. If it stays frozen or no one replies, raise a grievance on CPGRAMS at pgportal.gov.in, or file an RTI to your RTO's Public Information Officer asking for the file status and the cause of delay.

Can I renew my licence without visiting the RTO?

Often yes. Where your state supports it, choose “Submit via Aadhaar Authentication” on Sarathi for a faceless renewal. An OTP to your Aadhaar-linked mobile verifies you, your details sync automatically, and the renewed licence is issued without an RTO visit.
