Email: [email protected]
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) runs the single national Aadhaar helpline 1947, toll-free, with agents in English and Hindi, and backs it with a grievance portal, email, regional offices and a head office in New Delhi. It is a statutory authority under the Aadhaar Act, 2016 — which also makes it a public authority under §2(h) of the RTI Act, 2005. That last fact is the one most callers miss: when the helpline logs a complaint but nothing moves, the Right to Information Act is the crowbar that opens the file.

When to call — and which route each problem takes
Aadhaar enrolment status
Call 1947 and follow the IVR, or check yourself at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/check-aadhaar-status with your enrolment ID and date. Keep the enrolment slip handy — the EID is the key to every route.
Update biometric or demographic details
Address and other demographic updates go online through myAadhaar; biometric updates need a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre. Update charges apply per UIDAI's published fee schedule — confirm the current rate on uidai.gov.in or from 1947 before you pay, because the schedule has been revised in the recent past and commentary sites still quote old figures.
Lost or never-received Aadhaar
Download a free e-Aadhaar or retrieve your Aadhaar number/EID at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/retrieve-eid using your name and registered mobile number.
Suspected fraud or impersonation
Call 1947 first, then lock your biometrics — the Lock/Unlock Biometrics facility on uidai.gov.in / myAadhaar disables biometric authentication so no one can withdraw money against your Aadhaar. File an FIR at the local police station for AEPS or impersonation fraud, and send the complaint copy to your UIDAI regional office.
The escalation ladder
- Step 1 — 1947 or the grievance portal. Log the complaint and save the grievance number.
- Step 2 — Regional office. No resolution in a reasonable time? Email the regional office covering your state, quoting the grievance number, with documents attached.
- Step 3 — Head office. Write to UIDAI Head Office, Bangla Sahib Road, Gole Market, New Delhi - 110001, marking a copy to [email protected].
- Step 4 — RTI. Still nothing? File an RTI as below. A public authority must reply within 30 days under §7(1) of the RTI Act, 2005.
If the helpline does not resolve — file an RTI
Helplines often log a complaint without solving it. RTI gives you the file noting + officer name + actual reasoning, and most stuck cases clear within 7-15 days of the PIO query.
1. Status of my complaint / application no. _____ dated _____ as on date. 2. Name + designation of the officer assigned to my file. 3. Reasons for delay beyond the statutory timeline. 4. Copy of any noting / movement of my file in the past 30 days. 5. Likely date of resolution.

Example. Shanti, a farm labourer in Vidisha, paid for a biometric update in March 2026; the enrolment operator's slip showed “update failed”, and by May her PDS ration was blocked for KYC. Two calls to 1947 produced grievance numbers but no fix. She filed an RTI asking for the notings on both grievance numbers, and separately emailed the UIDAI regional office covering her state. The update was re-processed within 11 days of the RTI landing with the CPIO; her KYC cleared the same week. Cost: ₹10 RTI fee, plus ₹0 for the helpline.
FAQ
Is 1947 toll-free from mobiles too?
Yes. 1947 is the national toll-free Aadhaar helpline reachable from mobile and landline, with service in English and Hindi.
What can 1947 actually change?
Agents can log grievances, explain status, and route you to the right facility. They cannot edit records directly — updates happen through myAadhaar or a centre, which is why you should always secure a grievance number.
Which language does the helpline support?
English and Hindi, as published on uidai.gov.in. Regional-language support runs through the IVR where available.
The helpline gave me a grievance number and nothing happened. What now?
Escalate to your UIDAI regional office in writing, and file the RTI above — §7(1) puts a 30-day clock on the reply, and silence is deemed refusal under §7(2), which you can appeal under §19(1).
How do I stop unauthorised AEPS withdrawals?
Lock your biometrics immediately using the Lock/Unlock Biometrics facility on uidai.gov.in/myAadhaar, report to 1947, and file an FIR. Then use the AI RTI Drafter to ask UIDAI for the authentication log of the disputed transactions.
Where is the UIDAI head office?
UIDAI Head Office, Bangla Sahib Road, Behind Kali Mandir, Gole Market, New Delhi - 110001 — the address published on uidai.gov.in. Older pages that show a Connaught Place address are out of date.
Do I pay a fee for a UIDAI RTI?
₹10 as the central fee, payable by IPO or online for central public authorities — see State-wise RTI fees for the full fee map. BPL applicants are exempt under §7(5).
Can I check Aadhaar status without calling?
Yes — myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/check-aadhaar-status for enrolment status, and myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/retrieve-eid to recover your Aadhaar number or EID.
