RTI fee in Madhya Pradesh — 2026 schedule

• Application fee: Rs 10 per application, under the Madhya Pradesh RTI fee and appeal rules.
• Paper route — a Rs 10 non-judicial stamp affixed to the application, or an IPO/DD, or Rs 10 cash against a proper receipt at the office counter.
• Online route — rti.mp.gov.in carries the application through an SBI-backed payment gateway (net banking, Master/Visa/RuPay cards).
• BPL applicants: Rs 0 — attach the BPL card copy; the exemption from both application and additional fee is statutory under §7(5).
• First appeal: Rs 0. Second appeal: Rs 0. MP charges nothing for appeals; two states do — Maharashtra (Rs 20 per appeal) and Bihar (Rs 10).

The Rs 10 buys the answer. Extra charges apply only when you order reproductions, and the PIO must intimate them in writing, with the calculation:

• Photocopies — a per-page rate from the schedule; the notice must show the rate and page count.
• CD or pen drive — a fixed media charge.
• Inspection — the first hour is free, with an hourly rate thereafter.
• Email supply of an electronic record costs nothing extra — ask for that first.

You have 30 days to pay any additional fee. If the PIO then misses the statutory deadline, §7(6) entitles you to the information free of charge.

• The office that holds the record — patwari and tehsil records go to the tehsil PIO; collectorate files to the collectorate; PHED, school education, police and boards each have their own PIOs.
• District versus headquarters — a district-level record is with the district office, not the secretariat in Bhopal.
• Wrong office — §6(3) obliges the receiving PIO to transfer the application to the right one within 5 days, free of cost.
• Language — Hindi is the working language of the state; English is equally valid.
• Central offices in MP — use rtionline.gov.in, not the state portal.

• Commission: Madhya Pradesh State Information Commission — sic.mp.gov.in, with cause lists, decisions and circulars online.
• Second appeal window: 90 days from the FAA order or the FAA deadline's expiry — §19(3).
• Complaint route: if an office has no PIO at all, or refuses to accept your application, a §18(1) complaint direct to the Commission works alongside any appeal.

1. Ask for the rule number and exact amount in writing — invented heads like “search fee” or “special handling” collapse the moment they must be cited.
2. Quote §7(5) with your BPL card; no charge can survive it.
3. No reply in 30 days, or a half reply? The free first appeal to the same office's FAA — format in the first appeal format guide.
4. FAA silent for 45 days, or against you? Second appeal to the Commission, free — and request §20 penalty (Rs 250 per day of delay, capped at Rs 25,000) against the PIO.

An RTI to the Commission itself, asking for “the RTI fee schedule in force and the notification under which each rate stands”, is a clean way to end a fee dispute.

• Non-judicial stamp — note the stamp's serial number in your application copy before it is cancelled by the office.
• IPO — write the number, date and payee in the application; keep the counterfoil.
• DD — the draft number and date go into the application text.
• Cash — only against a receipt; no receipt, no 30-day clock, so do not walk away without one.

An office that says “fee not received” against any of these meets its own fee register in the first appeal — ask for that entry by date, and the dispute closes.

MP practice runs on the non-judicial stamp, IPO or DD. If an office insists on one particular mode, get that insistence in writing — it is rarely grounded in the rules.
