Documents required for passport renewal — 2026 checklist
Direct answer. Passport renewal (re-issue) requires fewer documents than fresh passport. Old passport + current address proof + recent photos suffice in most cases. Apply at passportindia.gov.in. Tatkal Re-issue (Rs. 3,500): processed in 1-3 days. Normal Re-issue (Rs. 1,500): 15 days. SLA: 7-15 days for re-issue.
Mandatory documents
- Old passport — Original + photocopy of first 2 + last 2 pages + ECR/ECNR + observation pages
- Aadhaar — Identity verification
- Current address proof — Aadhaar / Voter ID / Electricity bill (≤1 year)
- Two recent photographs — 4.5 × 3.5 cm, white background, taken within 6 months
- Annexure F (declaration) — For Tatkal re-issue
- Updated personal details documents — Marriage certificate (surname change), gazette (name correction), divorce decree (reverting name)

- Annexure I (verification) — For Tatkal — by 2 known persons with valid IDs
- Birth certificate — For minor passport renewal
- Marriage certificate — For surname change post-marriage

Specifications + key rules
- Renewal vs Re-issue vs Reset: Renewal = expired passport. Re-issue = damaged/lost/changes in personal details. Reset = full rebuild.
- Apply 12 months before expiry OR up to 12 months after expiry — both treated as re-issue.
- Beyond 12 months expired = treated as fresh passport application; full document set + PV again.
- Tatkal Re-issue Rs. 3,500: 1-3 days. Normal Rs. 1,500: 15 days.
- No PV needed for normal re-issue if previous PV was clean (typical).
- Address change during renewal triggers fresh PV at new address.
