Step-by-step

  1. Find your EID/SRN: it's on the receipt slip you got at the enrolment centre. Format: 14-digit number / date / time (e.g., 1234/56789/01234 25/04/2026 14:30).
  2. For new enrolment status: go to the status portal. Enter EID + captcha.
  3. For update SRN status: go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.inCheck Update Status → enter SRN.
  4. If status is “Generated” — download e-Aadhaar from the same portal (free; needs OTP on registered mobile).
  5. If status is “In Progress” — wait. UIDAI updates every few days.
  6. If status is “Rejected” — note the rejection reason. Common: biometric mismatch, incorrect demographic data, document mismatch. Re-enrol at any UIDAI centre with corrected details.

Real story from a citizen

What we hear from RTI Wiki users: Priya, a 24-year-old MBA student in Pune, applied for an Aadhaar update to change her surname after marriage. SRN status said “In Process” for 119 days. She filed an RTI to UIDAI Bengaluru Regional Office asking (a) SRN current stage, (b) reason for delay beyond 30-day SLA, © officer in charge, (d) document deficiency notices issued, (e) projected completion. Reply in 26 days flagged a marriage-certificate format issue she could fix online. Update completed in 9 days after re-upload.

7 reasons your status may be stuck

  • Biometric quality flag — finger/iris capture marked “low quality” by UIDAI back-end. Fix: re-enrol at any UIDAI centre with fresh biometrics.
  • Document mismatch — your name on PAN/passport doesn't exactly match the form. UIDAI is strict about full vs initials.
  • Quality control hold — 1-2% of enrolments are randomly QC-held. Fix: file an RTI with SRN; usually clears.
  • Demographic mismatch with existing Aadhaar — you may already have an Aadhaar under a different EID and didn't know. Fix: 1947 helpline can search by demographic.
  • Linked-mobile issue — OTP fails so e-Aadhaar download fails. Fix: visit a centre to update mobile.
  • Incomplete update package — you submitted address change but proof of address was rejected. Fix: re-submit with valid PoA.
  • Operator error at enrolment centre — captured wrong data. Common in busy enrolment hours. Fix: re-enrolment + RTI to the centre operator.

Pro tips most don't know

  • Use Order Aadhaar Reprint (Rs. 50) instead of waiting for status — gets a physical card delivered in 5-7 days.
  • The mAadhaar app stores up to 5 family Aadhaars and works offline once downloaded — no need to wait for “physical card”.
  • To verify your Aadhaar is active and unmasked, use the eKYC verification at any bank/post office — instant.
  • Lost your EID receipt? Visit a UIDAI centre with mobile + ID — they can retrieve via demographic search; saves the re-enrol fee.
  • If 1947 helpline is busy, WhatsApp UIDAI on 9311471234 — official channel, often faster reply.
