Direct answer. Each state has its own civil-supplies portal. Most-used: Tamil Nadu — tnpds.gov.in · Maharashtra — mahafood.gov.in · Karnataka — ahara.kar.nic.in · UP — fcs.up.gov.in · Bihar — epds.bihar.gov.in. Open your state's portal → “Check Application Status” → enter Application ID or Aadhaar number. NFSA SLA is 30 days for new card; correction varies (typically 15-30 days). This guide covers every status-check method, state portal links, reasons for delay, and the RTI escalation path if your application is stuck.
| What you need | Application ID OR Aadhaar number OR ration card number |
| Tamil Nadu | tnpds.gov.in (Tamil + English) |
| Maharashtra | mahafood.gov.in (Marathi + English) |
| Karnataka | ahara.kar.nic.in |
| Uttar Pradesh | fcs.up.gov.in |
| Bihar | epds.bihar.gov.in |
| Delhi | nfs.delhigovt.nic.in |
| National (NFSA) | nfsa.gov.in — search by household ID |
| National PDS Portal | pdsportal.nic.in — ONORC + beneficiary search |
| SLA | 30 days under state Civil Supplies Rules |
| Statutory base | National Food Security Act 2013 |
Checking your ration card status online is the fastest way to know whether your application has been approved, is pending, or has been rejected. Here's the general process that applies across most state portals:
Tip: Take a screenshot or note down the status reference number shown on screen — you'll need it if you file a grievance or RTI later.
If your state's portal does not show the status or shows an error, try the central NFSA portal which aggregates beneficiary data from all states. You can search by State + District + Ration Card Number or Aadhaar to find your household record.
For a broader guide on tracking government application statuses, see all status-check guides on RTI Wiki.
Every ration card application — whether new, correction, or member addition — generates a unique Application Reference Number (also called Application ID, Token Number, or Acknowledgment Number). This is the most reliable way to track your status because it is tied specifically to your request.
Where to find your application number:
How to track by application number:
| Step | Action |
| — | — |
| 1 | Open your state PDS portal (see state-wise table) |
| 2 | Click “Application Status” or “Track Application” |
| 3 | Select “Search by Application Number” |
| 4 | Enter your Application ID + captcha |
| 5 | View status: Submitted → Under Verification → Approved / Rejected |
Lost your application number? Visit the office where you submitted the application with your Aadhaar and address proof. The counter staff can retrieve your application number from their system. Alternatively, search by Aadhaar number on the state portal (see next section).
Since the mandatory Aadhaar-seeding of ration cards under NFSA (notified in 2017, strengthened in 2024), most state portals allow you to search your ration card status using your Aadhaar number — even if you don't have the application reference number handy.
Steps to check by Aadhaar:
What if Aadhaar is not linked to your ration card?
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
| — | — | — |
| “No record found” | Aadhaar not yet seeded in PDS database | Visit your FPS or District Supply Office for biometric e-KYC seeding |
| “Aadhaar mismatch” | Name or DOB differs between Aadhaar and ration card | Correct ration card name to match Aadhaar — see Aadhaar correction via RTI |
| “Multiple cards found” | Duplicate card flag from old address | Surrender the old card; file RTI for duplicate-detection report |
| OTP not received | Mobile not linked or DND active | Update mobile at Aadhaar centre, then retry |
For issues with Aadhaar itself (deactivation, biometric lock), see our guides on Aadhaar status via RTI and Aadhaar update status check.
Once your ration card is approved, the physical card is printed and dispatched to your address or made available for pickup. The delivery stage is separate from the approval stage, and many applicants are confused about why the status shows “Approved” but no card has arrived.
How to track delivery:
| Delivery stage | What it means | Expected time |
| — | — | — |
| Card Approved | Application fully processed | — |
| Card Printed | Physical card generated at printing centre | 3-7 days |
| Dispatched to FPS / Post | Card in transit | 5-10 days |
| Delivered | Card handed to beneficiary or available at FPS | Confirmation needed |
| Not delivered after 15 days | Lost / returned / wrong address | File grievance + RTI |
e-Ration Card: Many states now issue digital ration cards (PDF) that you can download immediately after approval — no need to wait for physical delivery. Check your state portal for “Download e-Ration Card” using Aadhaar OTP.
If your status has been stuck on “Pending” or “Under Verification” for more than 30 days, one of these reasons is likely the cause:
Status meaning table:
| Status you may see | What it means | What to do |
| — | — | — |
| Submitted | Application received, awaiting processing | Wait 7-10 days |
| Under Verification | Field officer / Patwari checking details | Wait; follow up after 15 days |
| Pending at BDO/Tehsil | Stuck at a verification stage | Visit office; file RTI after 30 days |
| Approved | Card sanctioned, awaiting dispatch | Check delivery status |
| Rejected | Application denied | Demand reasons under §4(1)(d); appeal |
| Not Found | Wrong number or not in system | Try Aadhaar search; re-verify application number |
Below is a table of the top 10 states by ration card coverage, with direct links to their PDS status-check portals. For the full list of all 36 states/UTs, visit the NFSA portal or the national PDS portal.

For state-specific RTI filing instructions (fees, addresses, PIO details), see the state-by-state ration card guide.
Understanding your NFSA (National Food Security Act) category is essential because it determines your entitlement quantity, price, and which status-check portal applies. Under NFSA 2013, beneficiaries are classified into the following categories:
| Category | Full name | Entitlement | Price | Who qualifies |
| — | — | — | — | — |
| AAY | Antyodaya Anna Yojana | 35 kg/family/month | Rs 1-3/kg | Poorest of poor; landless labourers, elderly, disabled |
| PHH | Priority Household | 5 kg/person/month | Rs 1-3/kg | Identified by state socio-economic survey |
| Non-PHH (APL) | Above Poverty Line | State-specific | Market rate or subsidised | Not covered under NFSA entitlement |
Key points:
To apply for a BPL/AAY ration card, see our guide: How to apply for a BPL ration card.
If your ration card application (new, correction, or member addition) has been pending beyond the 30-day SLA, you have a statutory right under §6 of the RTI Act 2005 to demand information from the public authority. A reply is mandatory within 30 days.

BPL applicants can file RTI for free — see how to claim the BPL RTI fee waiver.
If you applied for a correction — such as name spelling, address change, DOB correction, or category change — the tracking process is similar to a new application but typically faster (15-30 days vs 30+ for new cards).
Common correction types and timelines:
| Correction type | Typical SLA | Verification needed |
| — | — | — |
| Name spelling | 15 days | Aadhaar match |
| Address change | 15-30 days | New address proof + field visit |
| Date of birth | 15 days | Birth certificate / Aadhaar |
| Category change (APL→BPL) | 30 days | Income certificate + field visit |
| Photo update | 7-15 days | Biometric capture at FPS/CSC |
| Member name correction | 15 days | Supporting document |
How to track correction status:
If your correction is delayed beyond 30 days, file an RTI to the District Supply Officer using the draft in the RTI section above. For Aadhaar-related corrections that may be blocking your ration card update, see Aadhaar correction via RTI.
Ration card mutation refers to adding or removing family members — such as adding a newborn after birth, adding a spouse after marriage, removing a deceased member, or changing the head of family. This is also called “member modification” on some state portals.
How to add a member:
How to remove a member (deceased):
How to change head of family:
For a detailed guide, see how to add a name to your ration card.
Pro tip: If you are adding a newborn, do it within 6 months of birth — many states waive documentation requirements and process it on an expedited track.
ONORC (One Nation One Ration Card), launched in 2019 and achieving full national coverage in 2022, lets you collect your entitled foodgrains from any Fair Price Shop in any state — not just your home state. This is critical for migrant workers and inter-state families.
How to check ONORC / portability status:
ONORC portability types:
| Type | Meaning |
| — | — |
| Intra-state portability | Use any FPS within your home state |
| Inter-state portability | Use any FPS in any other state across India |
If ONORC is not working at a particular FPS, complain to the State Helpdesk (1967) or file a grievance on the state portal. For systemic ONORC failures, an RTI to the Department of Food and Public Distribution is appropriate — see the full RTI guide.
What we hear from RTI Wiki users: Sushila, a 52-year-old domestic worker in Mumbai, applied for an APL → BPL category change after her husband's death. Status said “Pending” for 67 days. She filed an RTI to the Tehsil Food Inspector under §6 asking (a) status of her application, (b) household-verification report, © category re-determination criteria, (d) reason for delay, (e) projected issuance. Reply in 22 days revealed the verification officer had marked her case “household composition verification pending” — the Patwari hadn't visited. She physically went to the Patwari office with the RTI reply; visit done in 4 days; card upgraded.

30 days under most state Civil Supplies Rules. In practice: 30-60 days for AAY/BPL (income verification needed), 15-30 days for APL.
APL = Above Poverty Line (limited entitlement). BPL = Below Poverty Line (35 kg foodgrain/family). AAY = Antyodaya Anna Yojana (poorest of poor; 35 kg + extras).
No — illegal duplicate. Surrender the old before applying. ONORC lets you ration in any state with one card.
File grievance at state portal + RTI for FPS allotment register + Vigilance Committee complaint.
No — but ration card now requires Aadhaar e-KYC for all members (since 2024).
Yes. Most state portals and the NFSA portal allow you to search by Aadhaar number or Ration Card Number if you already have a card. See the section on checking by Aadhaar above.
It means your application is at the Block Development Officer for field verification (usually a household visit by the Patwari or inspector). The verification should be completed within 15 days of reaching this stage. If it has been more than 15 days, physically visit the BDO office. If more than 30 days total, file an RTI — see the RTI section.
Check your state PDS portal → “ONORC Status” or visit the national PDS portal. ONORC requires Aadhaar seeding and e-KYC for all family members. If status shows “Not Enabled”, complete Aadhaar e-KYC at your nearest FPS or Aadhaar centre. See Aadhaar update status check.
Yes. First, demand the specific reasons for rejection under §4(1)(d) of the RTI Act — you have a right to know. Common rejection reasons include income exceeding the BPL threshold, duplicate card detected, or incomplete documentation. Once you know the reason, you can either (a) submit a representation with additional evidence, (b) re-apply with corrected documents, or © file an appeal with the State Food Commission. See PIO reply guide if the rejection reason is evasive.
In most states, yes — if your card is approved and Aadhaar is linked. Log into your state PDS portal → “Download e-Ration Card” → authenticate with Aadhaar OTP → download the PDF. This digital card is legally valid. States like Tamil Nadu, UP, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Karnataka support full online download. For Aadhaar download help, see Aadhaar download guide.
The RTI application fee is Rs 10 in most states (free for BPL cardholders — see BPL RTI fee waiver). Some states charge Rs 20 (e.g., Andhra Pradesh) or have online payment options. Use the RTI Fee Calculator for state-specific fees.
NFSA (National Food Security Act 2013) is a central law that covers up to 75% of rural and 50% of urban populations. Some states have enacted their own State Food Security Acts (SFSA) that extend coverage beyond the NFSA ceiling — for example, Tamil Nadu's universal PDS covers all households. Check your state portal for whether it runs NFSA, SFSA, or both. See also Anna Bhagya (Karnataka) and Annadata Sukhibhava (Andhra Pradesh).
Yes, in most states. Visit your state PDS portal → “Add Member” → upload the birth certificate + Aadhaar (if the child has one; if not, you can add using birth certificate alone in many states). SLA is 30 days. For step-by-step, see how to add a name to ration card.
