Banking, UPI and payment failure guides

Reviewed on: 2026-06-12.

This category is about payments in motion: money that left your account but did not reach where it should, or money debited that you never authorised. It covers failed UPI transfers, ATM short dispensing, AEPS withdrawals you did not make, duplicate debits, and auto-debits that continue after you cancelled. Problems with the account itself sit in banking and money. Loans and credit reports sit in banking and finance.

Two rules give these disputes teeth. First, RBI's harmonised turnaround time circular of 2019 sets auto-reversal deadlines for failed transactions, with Rs 100 per day compensation when the bank misses them. Second, RBI's limited liability circular of 2017 caps your loss for unauthorised electronic transactions if you report within three working days. Quote the circular, not just the problem.

The ladder is short. Raise a dispute with your own bank first, in writing, with the transaction reference number. If it is not resolved in 30 days, escalate to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in. Each guide below walks one dispute type from the first complaint to the ombudsman, with the exact documents you need.
