How to File a Belated ITR Online - citizen guide 2026

To file after your normal due date, sign in at incometax.gov.in, choose AY 2026-27 for income earned in FY 2025-26, select the correct ITR form and use the belated-return route under section 139(4). Review the tax computation, submit the return and e-verify it within 30 days.

What you should do now

  1. Download Form 26AS and AIS.
  2. Gather every income record.
  3. Validate and nominate a refund bank account.

  5. Review every pre-filled entry before filing.

Last reviewed: 3 August 2026. Relevant period: FY 2025-26, AY 2026-27. These steps cover an individual filing a belated return on the official portal. The exact screen labels may change.

Make sure a belated return is the right route

Question If yes If no
Has your own normal due date passed? Continue this check. File a regular return under section 139(1).
Have you already filed a valid return for this AY? You may need a revised return, not a second belated return. Continue.
Is the AY 2026-27 belated window still open? File under section 139(4). Check ITR-U eligibility or a limited condonation route.

For AY 2026-27, the ordinary belated-return deadline is 31 December 2026 or completion of assessment, whichever is earlier. A person with non-audit business income may have a normal due date of 31 August 2026, so that person is not late merely because 31 July has passed.

The official Income Tax Returns FAQs explain the belated-return rule. Use the route chooser if you are unsure whether you need a regular, belated, revised or updated return.

Documents and details to collect

  • PAN, Aadhaar where applicable, and access to your own e-filing account.
  • Form 16 from every employer and salary slips.
  • Form 26AS, AIS and TIS downloaded from the portal.
  • Bank-interest certificates and details of other interest.
  • Capital-gain, mutual-fund, share, property or virtual-asset statements where relevant.
  • Rent, home-loan and eligible deduction evidence.
  • Advance-tax and self-assessment-tax challans.
  • Foreign income or asset details if applicable.
  • A bank account that can be validated and nominated for refund.

Form 16 is not a complete return. It may not contain savings interest, a second employer, rent received or capital gains. Compare it with your own records.

File the return step by step

Step 1: use the genuine portal

Type incometax.gov.in yourself or use a saved trusted bookmark. Sign in with your user ID. Never share the password or OTP with a caller or screen-sharing stranger.

Step 2: open the filing service

Open e-File > Income Tax Returns > File Income Tax Return. The official ITR-1 User Manual shows the current filing path.

Step 3: choose AY 2026-27

Income earned from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026 belongs to FY 2025-26. The return for that income uses AY 2026-27. Choosing AY 2025-26 is a common and costly mistake.

Step 4: choose online or offline mode

Online mode suits many simpler individual returns. Offline mode uses the current utility and an uploaded JSON file. Use only the utility downloaded from the official portal.

Step 5: select status and the correct ITR form

Choose Individual if that is your legal status. Then select the form based on income, not convenience. ITR-1 has eligibility limits. Business income, capital gains, foreign assets and other facts can require another form.

Step 6: select the filing reason and section

Where the portal asks why you are filing, answer truthfully. For a return filed after your applicable section 139(1) date and within the late window, select the option corresponding to section 139(4), belated return.

Do not choose section 139(1) merely to avoid a fee. Do not select ITR-U when the ordinary belated route is open. The filing section must match the facts.

Step 7: review every pre-filled schedule

Check personal information, salary, house property, other income, deductions, taxes paid and bank accounts. Reconcile TDS with Form 26AS. Review AIS information, but correct the return using reliable records if AIS contains a duplicate or error.

Step 8: calculate and pay tax

Review tax, rebate, surcharge and cess as applicable. A section 234F fee or interest may appear. If tax remains payable, use the portal's e-Pay Tax service, save the challan and make sure the payment appears in the return schedule before submission.

Do not pay the same amount twice merely because a screen did not refresh. First check the payment history and challan status.

Step 9: preview, validate and submit

Read the return summary. Check the bank account, total income, deductions, tax paid, refund or amount payable, and filing section. Resolve validation errors. Submit only after the return is internally consistent.

Step 10: e-verify within 30 days

Use a permitted method such as Aadhaar OTP, bank EVC, demat EVC, net banking or digital signature where applicable. If you use signed ITR-V instead, follow the portal's current dispatch instructions. A submitted but unverified return is not safely complete.

Illustration: a return with refund

Illustration only: Meera has salary and bank interest. Her applicable due date was 31 July 2026. On 10 August she selects AY 2026-27 and section 139(4), adds bank interest missing from the pre-fill and claims TDS visible in Form 26AS. The correct calculation still shows excess tax. She submits, e-verifies and keeps the acknowledgement. A belated return can show a refund, but the refund is subject to processing.

Fix common portal problems

Problem What to check first
AY is not available Filing window, selected form and whether you are using the current utility.
JSON validation fails Download the latest utility, read the exact rule and regenerate the file.
TDS is missing Compare Form 26AS, the certificate and deductor details; ask the deductor to correct a wrong statement.
Paid challan is missing Verify CIN details and payment history before another payment.
Bank validation fails PAN-name match, account status, IFSC and contact with the bank.
Return will not submit Save the error, try a supported browser and raise an e-filing grievance if it is a portal fault.

For a technical issue, use the portal grievance service and retain the transaction ID. An RTI application does not submit a return or correct data in your tax account.

After submission

  1. Download the acknowledgement.
  2. Confirm that the status says successfully e-verified, not only submitted.
  3. Save the complete return, computation and challans.
  4. Watch for processing under section 143(1).
  5. Read the intimation instead of relying only on a refund message.
  6. Revise within the permitted period if you discover a genuine omission.

Is submission enough?

No. Complete e-verification within 30 days or follow the valid ITR-V route. Then check that the portal status reflects verification.

Can I correct a belated return later?

Yes, a return filed under section 139(4) can be revised under section 139(5) within the applicable revision period.
