Late ITR Help Centre - citizen guide 2026

Missed an income-tax return date? Start with your actual taxpayer category, FY and AY. A typical salaried filer who missed 31 July 2026 can normally file a belated return for AY 2026-27 by 31 December 2026, but an eligible non-audit business filer may still have a 31 August normal date. Use the path below for filing, fees, refund, verification or correction.

Indian taxpayers using a clear help centre to choose the right late ITR action

Most urgent action: check whether a filing or verification clock is running. Do not wait for the final day while gathering documents or resolving a portal problem.

Last reviewed: 3 August 2026. Coverage: FY 2025-26 and AY 2026-27. This hub routes readers to distinct guides and does not replace personal tax advice.

For a plain-language matrix covering fees, interest, refunds, losses and tax-regime choices, read what happens if the ITR deadline is missed. It is the consequences guide; the pages above provide the action for each problem.

Four dates that prevent most mistakes

Date for AY 2026-27 Main category
31 July 2026 Typical ITR-1 and ITR-2 filing date
31 August 2026 Eligible non-audit business and profession cases
31 December 2026 Ordinary belated-return deadline, subject to earlier assessment completion
31 March 2027 Revised-return deadline, subject to earlier assessment completion

Audit and transfer-pricing categories have other normal dates. The official Return of Income tutorial gives the category table.

Keep this basic file ready

  • PAN and your own portal access.
  • Form 16 or other TDS certificates.
  • Form 26AS, AIS and TIS.
  • Bank, investment, property and income records.
  • Tax-payment challans.
  • A validated and nominated refund bank account.
  • Filed-return acknowledgement where a correction is needed.

Never share portal, Aadhaar or bank OTPs. The Income Tax Department does not need remote control of your phone to release a refund.

Where RTI fits

RTI gives access to identifiable existing records held by a public authority. It does not file or verify an ITR, extend a deadline, grant condonation, remove a demand, recompute tax or order a refund. Use the tax portal's return, grievance, rectification, demand, refund and appeal services first.

Frequently asked questions

I missed 31 July. Is filing closed?

Not usually for AY 2026-27. A typical salaried filer can normally use section 139(4) by 31 December 2026 or earlier assessment completion.

Is everyone late after 31 July?

No. Eligible non-audit business cases have a 31 August 2026 normal date, and audit categories have later dates.

Which page gives the portal steps?

Use the online belated-return filing guide linked in the decision table.

Which page helps after I already filed?

Use the 12-point post-filing checklist for verification, tax, bank, processing, demand and revision.

Can a late return still produce a refund?

Yes, where the correct processed computation shows excess tax paid. Use the refund eligibility guide before the delay guide.

Does an RTI request stop the filing clock?

No. RTI neither extends nor suspends an income-tax filing deadline.
