FASTag OneTag: switch bank, keep the sticker — citizen guide 2026

If your FASTag bank app is broken, your wallet is frozen, or you simply want another issuer, you no longer have to peel the sticker off the windshield and wait for a new tag in the post. From 17 September 2026, NHAI's OneTag portability service on the Rajmargyatra app lets you change the issuer bank while the same physical FASTag and the same tag ID stay on the vehicle.

Quick answer: Open the Rajmargyatra app, enter your vehicle registration number, take the six-digit Mobile Verification Code from your current issuer, pick a new issuer, finish KYC and wallet onboarding. The sticker stays. The old bank closes the wallet and refunds the balance after adjustments. You cannot port again for six months.

Do this on the Rajmargyatra app

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways published the citizen steps in PIB Release ID 2311392 on 17 September 2026. Follow them in this order. Do not start a second port while the first is open.

  1. 1. Install or open Rajmargyatra. The official app is Rajmargyatra on Google Play and Rajmargyatra on the App Store. The web desk is rajmargyatra.nhai.gov.in.
  2. 2. Log in and enter the vehicle registration number. The app checks whether that FASTag is eligible to port.
  3. 3. Enter the six-digit Mobile Verification Code (MVC). Your current issuer bank sends it. Use the mobile number already linked to that FASTag.
  4. 4. Choose a new issuer. Complete that bank's customer verification and wallet onboarding inside the same flow.
  5. 5. Leave the sticker where it is. After a successful port, the existing FASTag ID linked to the registration number does not change. The same physical tag keeps working.
  6. 6. Watch the old wallet close. The previous issuer closes that FASTag wallet and refunds the available balance, after applicable adjustments. The refund is not an automatic transfer into the new wallet.

① Check eligibility on the app. ② Take the MVC from the old bank. ③ Onboard the new issuer. ④ Keep the sticker. ⑤ Wait for the old-wallet refund.

Item What OneTag does What it does not do
Physical FASTag on the glass Stays Does not issue a replacement sticker
FASTag ID linked to the RC Stays the same Does not give you a new tag ID
Issuer bank / wallet Changes Does not move the old balance across automatically
Next port Allowed after 6 months Does not let you hop banks every week

What OneTag is, in 50 words

OneTag is NHAI's FASTag portability service. It lets you change the bank or issuer that runs your FASTag wallet without buying or affixing a new RFID sticker. The physical tag and the tag ID stay. The old wallet is closed and refunded after adjustments. A six-month cooling period then applies.

Why this is not a new FASTag

A new FASTag is a fresh sticker, a fresh ID, a fresh KYC cycle and a period when the old tag must be closed so you are not charged twice. OneTag is the opposite: the windshield tag is treated as the vehicle's permanent radio identity, and only the issuer behind it changes.

NHAI's 17 September 2026 note lists the reason as consumer choice, plus lower cost from not printing and posting replacement tags. The same Rajmargyatra app already hosts the FASTag Annual Pass, the FASTag Local Pass and the highway helpline 1033.

If you still need a first FASTag, that is a different job. Use how to apply for FASTag.

What happens to your money

PIB 2311392 is precise on this point. After a successful port:

  • the previous issuer closes the existing FASTag wallet
  • it refunds the available balance, after applicable adjustments
  • the new issuer is the one you onboarded in step 4, with its own wallet

“Available balance” after adjustments is not the same as the last figure you saw in the old app. Pending plaza transactions, failed-lane retries and any contractual hold can still settle against the old wallet before the refund is calculated. Keep screenshots of:

  • old-app balance on the day you start the port
  • MVC SMS
  • in-app success screen
  • bank credit of the refund
  • first toll SMS from the new issuer

If the refund does not land, complain first to the old issuer (it still holds the closing wallet), then to NHAI through Rajmargyatra's complaint desk or 1033, then to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in after 30 days or a rejection. See the RBI Ombudsman 2026 guide.

The six-month cooling period

PIB 2311392 states that an interoperable FASTag has a cooling period of 6 months before it can be ported again. Treat that as a hard wait, not a customer-service courtesy.

Port once, then live with that issuer for six months unless NHAI later publishes a shorter window. Do not start a second request because the first refund is slow. Two open requests are how tags get blacklisted. If the tag is already blacklisted, fix that first: FASTag blacklisted despite balance.

When you should not port

  • You do not yet have a working FASTag. Apply for one instead.
  • The vehicle RC and the FASTag name do not match. Get the KYC repaired first.
  • A toll dispute or double deduction is still open on the old issuer. Close or document it, then port. See FASTag double deduction.
  • You are inside six months of a previous port.
  • Someone else is listed as the FASTag customer on a vehicle you just bought. Transfer the vehicle first, then ask the new issuer what OneTag will accept.

An illustrative situation, not a named person. A private-car owner in Jaipur has a live FASTag whose bank app has not shown a recharge for three weeks, though the plaza still deducts. She opens Rajmargyatra, enters the RC, receives the MVC on the same mobile that gets the toll SMS, onboards another issuer, and leaves the sticker in place. Two days later the old bank credits the leftover wallet to her account, minus one plaza debit that had been in flight. She cannot port again until March 2027.

If the app says you are not eligible

Screenshot the exact message. Then:

  1. Confirm the FASTag is active on rajmargyatra.nhai.gov.in with the same RC.
  2. Confirm the MVC mobile is the one on the issuer's KYC, not a new SIM.
  3. Call 1033 and ask for the OneTag eligibility reason against that RC.
  4. File a written complaint in the app. Note the ticket number.
  5. If NHAI or the old issuer sits on the file, use the RTI below.

The National Highways Authority of India is a public authority under the National Highways Authority of India Act, 1988, read with Section 2(h) of the RTI Act, 2005. You are asking for the eligibility log and the refund file, not for another person's wallet.

Sample RTI to NHAI

File at rtionline.gov.in against the National Highways Authority of India. Fee ₹10. The PIO has 30 days under Section 7(1). If the record sits with IHMCL or the old issuer bank that is a public-sector bank, the PIO must transfer under Section 6(3) within 5 days.

What to do in the next 30 minutes

  • Download Rajmargyatra from the official store links above, not a third-party APK.
  • Photograph the FASTag already on the glass (no need to peel it).
  • Screenshot today's old-app balance and last five toll SMS.
  • Run the eligibility check with your RC.
  • If you only wanted a cheaper annual highway pass, that is a different product: the FASTag Annual Pass on the same app.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to buy a new FASTag to change banks?

No. PIB 2311392 says OneTag lets you change the issuer while retaining the existing FASTag affixed to the vehicle, so you do not need a new physical tag.

Will plazas still read my sticker after the port?

The existing FASTag ID linked to the registration number remains unchanged. The same sticker is what the plaza reader already knows.

Where does my old balance go?

The previous issuer closes that wallet and refunds the available balance after applicable adjustments. It does not automatically become the opening balance of the new wallet.

How soon can I port again?

After six months. PIB 2311392 calls this the cooling period for an interoperable FASTag.

Which app do I use?

NHAI's Rajmargyatra app. The 17 September 2026 note does not list a bank-app shortcut as the official OneTag door.

What else is on the same app?

FASTag Annual Pass, FASTag Local Pass, emergency helpline 1033, and other highway services named in the same PIB note.

My tag is blacklisted. Can I still port?

Fix the blacklist first. A refused eligibility check is the likely result until the tag is live. Use the blacklist guide, then retry OneTag.

Who do I RTI if the refund is stuck?

NHAI for the OneTag file. If the old issuer is a public-sector bank, you can also RTI that bank's PIO for the wallet-closure ledger. Private issuers are not public authorities; use their grievance cell and then the RBI Ombudsman.
