Quick summary

  • Authority: Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the government body for आधार.
  • Portal: myAadhaar status page on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
  • What you need: the URN, SRN or EID from your acknowledgement slip, plus your registered mobile for OTP.
  • App option: the official mAadhaar app also shows request status.
  • Safety: UIDAI never charges a fee to check status, and never asks for your OTP by phone.

What the status check tells you

When you enrol for a new Aadhaar, or update your name, address or other details, UIDAI does not finish the work on the spot. Your request goes for verification first.

The status check tells you where your request has reached. It shows whether your Aadhaar is still being processed, has been generated or updated, or has been rejected.

An “enrolment” request means you applied for a brand-new Aadhaar number. An “update” request means you changed details on an Aadhaar you already hold.

Knowing the status helps you decide what to do next. If it is done, you can download your Aadhaar. If it is rejected, you can fix the problem and apply again.

The difference between URN, SRN and EID

You track your request using one reference number from your acknowledgement slip. Which one you have depends on how you applied.

Use exactly the number shown on your slip. If you cannot read it clearly, do not guess. Call the UIDAI helpline on 1947 for help.

How to check Aadhaar update status

Follow these steps on the official portal. The flow is the same for both enrolment and update requests.

Step 1 — Open the official UIDAI portal

Visit the myAadhaar portal at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Always type the address yourself or use this link. Do not trust look-alike sites that copy the UIDAI design.

Step 2 — Select "Check Enrolment and Update Status"

On the portal, choose the option to check your enrolment and update status. This opens the form where you enter your reference number.

Step 3 — Enter your URN, SRN or EID

Type the reference number exactly as printed on your acknowledgement slip. Copy every digit and any date or time portion shown.

Step 4 — Enter the captcha

Type the captcha characters shown on screen. This proves you are a real person and not an automated bot.

Step 5 — Submit and read your status

Click submit. The portal displays your current status, such as “Under Processing” or that your Aadhaar has been generated or updated.

Step 6 — Download your Aadhaar if it is ready

If the status shows your Aadhaar is generated or updated, you can download the latest copy. See our Aadhaar download guide for the exact steps.

Details you may need, and what each status means

Keep these details handy before you start.

Detail Why you need it
URN, SRN or EID Your reference number to look up the request
Acknowledgement slip Shows the reference number and the request date
Registered mobile Receives OTP if the flow asks for it
Captcha Confirms a human is making the request

The portal usually shows one of a few simple statuses. The exact wording can vary, so read the screen carefully.

Status shown What it means
Under Processing Your request is still being verified by UIDAI
Aadhaar Generated or Updated The work is done, and you can download Aadhaar
Rejected The request could not be approved, so action is needed

What to do if your update is delayed or rejected

Updates can take time to reflect, so a short wait is normal. If your status stays “Under Processing” far longer than expected, or shows “Rejected”, take action.

First, call the UIDAI helpline on 1947 to ask the reason. You can also file a complaint online at the UIDAI complaint page and track it on the complaint-status page.

If the official channels do not respond, you have a legal right to demand answers. UIDAI is a public authority under the Right to Information Act, 2005.

You can file an RTI application to UIDAI asking for the status of your request, the reason for any rejection, and the action taken on your complaint. Under Section 6(1) you have the right to file the request, and under Section 7(1) the authority must reply within 30 days.

Our Aadhaar RTI status guide and Aadhaar correction RTI guide explain the wording. You can also draft your application with the RTI Drafter.

Safety warnings

Aadhaar is a sensitive document, so stay careful while checking status.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an Aadhaar update take to reflect?

An update can take some time to process and reflect, because UIDAI verifies the change before approving it. Many updates appear within a few weeks, but the exact time varies by request type. Keep checking the status on the myAadhaar portal using your reference number. If it stays “Under Processing” much longer than expected, call 1947 to ask why.

I lost my acknowledgement slip. Can I still check status?

You need the URN, SRN or EID to look up your request online, and these are printed on the slip. If you have lost it, call the UIDAI helpline on 1947 for help recovering your enrolment details. You may also be able to retrieve a lost EID through the official myAadhaar portal. Never share your details with private agents who claim to recover them for a fee.

Does it cost money to check Aadhaar status?

No. Checking your enrolment or update status on the official UIDAI portal is free of charge. Any website or person asking for payment just to show your status is not genuine. Use only the official myAadhaar portal or the mAadhaar app. If someone demands a fee, treat it as a warning sign and stop.

Can I check Aadhaar status on the mobile app?

Yes. The official mAadhaar app from UIDAI lets you check the status of your enrolment or update request. Download the app only from the official Google Play or Apple App Store listing. Inside the app, look for the status or check-request option and enter your reference number. As always, never share your OTP with anyone.

My update was rejected. What should I do now?

First, find out the reason. Call the UIDAI helpline on 1947, which can tell you why the request was rejected so you can correct it. Fix the problem, for example an unclear document, and submit a fresh request. If you get no clear answer, file an RTI application to UIDAI asking for the reason and the action taken. Our Aadhaar RTI guides explain how.
