India runs ₹50,000+ crore worth of scholarships every year — yet most eligible students never apply because the process feels confusing. This page is the simple, single hub: pick your level (school / college / vocational), check eligibility, apply on the right portal. All free.

Quick Answer

Who should read this page

  • Pre-matric / post-matric students (esp. SC/ST/OBC/EWS/Minority/PwD) — Scholarship Portal
  • College / undergraduate students — central + state scholarships
  • Class 1–12 students with weak digital access — eVIDYA + DIKSHA
  • School pass-outs without job — PMKVY skill training
  • Working adults wanting upskill — Skill India + SWAYAM

List of schemes in this category

Scholarships

  • National Scholarship Portal (NSP) — single window for 100+ central + state scholarships. Pre-matric, post-matric, top-class, merit-cum-means, minority, disability, single-girl-child, defence, etc. Apply at scholarships.gov.in.
  • State scholarship portals — every state has its own (Maharashtra MahaDBT, Karnataka SSP, Tamil Nadu Tnsmm, etc.). State scholarships are usually faster and don't need NSP.

Digital learning

  • PM eVIDYA — free digital education for Grades 1–12. Includes:
    • DIKSHA app (4.0+) — NCERT-aligned content in 33 languages
    • PM eVIDYA TV channels (200+ via DD/Doordarshan)
    • PRABHA channels for differently-abled
    • NISHTHA for teacher training
  • SWAYAM (swayam.gov.in) — free MOOCs from IITs/IIMs/IISc + 200 partner institutions. Certificates ~₹1,000 each (optional).
  • NPTEL — IIT/IISc engineering + science courses.

Skill training

  • Skill India Mission / PMKVY 4.0 — free short-term training (250+ courses) + assessment + ₹8,000 placement reward (some categories). Apply at pmkvyofficial.org.
  • Apprentices Act + NAPS — earn while you learn (₹7,000–10,000/month stipend) for 6–24 months.
  • DDU-GKY — for rural BPL youth — full residential training with placement.

Higher education

  • PM-USP (PM Uchchatar Shiksha Yojana) — formerly RUSA + central + state scholarships consolidated.
  • PM Special Scholarship Scheme — for J&K + Ladakh students for higher studies anywhere in India.
  • Maulana Azad National Fellowship — minorities, MPhil/PhD.
  • National Overseas Scholarship — SC/ST/De-notified Tribes for studies abroad.

How to apply — universal scholarship steps

  1. Aadhaar mobile-linked (mandatory).
  2. Bank account in student's name, Aadhaar-seeded.
  3. Income certificate from Tehsildar (not Patwari).
  4. Caste/Disability/Minority certificate if applicable.
  5. Mark sheets of the qualifying examination.
  6. Bonafide certificate from current institution.
  7. Login at scholarships.gov.in → “Fresh Application” → fill scheme-by-scheme. (You can apply to multiple compatible scholarships from same login.)
  8. Submit before deadline (varies by scholarship; usually Sept–Nov for the academic year).
  9. Institution verification — your school/college must verify your application within 15 days.
  10. District/State verification — 30 days.
  11. DBT credit to bank — typically Jan–Mar.

Common mistakes

  • Late application — most scholarships have a hard deadline. Set calendar alert.
  • Mismatch between Aadhaar / bank / institution name — single character difference rejects DBT. Fix Aadhaar first.
  • Income certificate from wrong officer — only Tehsildar/SDM-issued is valid.
  • Applying to non-applicable schemes — wastes time. Use the eligibility checker at scholarships.gov.in.
  • Skipping institution verification follow-up — your principal/PI must confirm; nudge them in writing.
  • No bonafide certificate for college students — most rejections trace here.
  • Multiple bank accounts confuse DBT — keep one Aadhaar-seeded account as primary.

FAQ

Can I apply to multiple scholarships in one academic year?

Yes — most are stackable as long as eligibility doesn't conflict. NSP shows compatibility automatically. State + central scholarships often double-up.

My family income is ₹4 lakh. Am I eligible?

Depends on scheme. Pre-matric / post-matric (SC/ST): most have ₹2.5–3 lakh income cap. OBC: ₹1 lakh cap (very low). Merit-cum-means: ₹4.5 lakh. EWS scholarships: ₹8 lakh. Use eligibility checker.

When does scholarship money come to my account?

Jan–March typically, after institution + district + state verifications. If delayed past May → file RTI for sanction status.

Do I need to repay scholarship?

No — scholarships are grants, not loans. Loans (Education Loan, NMMS, NMMSS) are separate.

I don't have a caste certificate. What can I do?

For SC/ST/OBC reservation: apply for caste certificate at Tehsildar (free, 30-45 days). For other scholarships (general/EWS), caste certificate not needed.

What is PMKVY 4.0 different from earlier versions?

PMKVY 4.0 (2022 onwards) has digital-first registration, micro-credentials in emerging tech (AI, drone, EV, semiconductor), on-the-job training (OJT) mandatory, and employer-linked outcomes measured.

Can I do PMKVY while in college?

Yes — PMKVY courses are short (3 months avg). Many are weekend / evening. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) under PMKVY also certifies your existing skills.

What's the difference between SWAYAM and DIKSHA?

SWAYAM is for higher education (UG/PG/professional). DIKSHA is for school education (Grades 1–12). Both free.
