What is Kanyashree Prakalpa and who does it cover?

Kanyashree Prakalpa is a Conditional Cash Transfer scheme run by the Department of Women Development and Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal. Its goal is straightforward: keep girls in school and delay marriage until at least age 18. The scheme has two separate components, each with its own form, eligibility rules, and benefit amount.

K1 - Annual Scholarship (Form K1): This is the recurring component. A girl aged 13 to 18 years who is studying in Class VIII or above receives Rs. 750 per year, provided she is unmarried and remains enrolled in education. The scholarship is renewed every year she stays in school and stays unmarried.

K2 - One-Time Grant (Form K2): This is the larger, single-payment component. Once a girl turns 18 and was unmarried at the time of application, she receives Rs. 25,000 as a one-time grant. She must also be engaged in an academic or occupational pursuit at that point.

Income condition: The scheme covers girls from families with annual income of Rs. 1,20,000 or less. This income cap is waived entirely for girls with special needs, orphans, and girls residing in Juvenile Justice Homes. Girls with special needs who are studying below Class VIII can also apply for the K1 annual scholarship.

The term “education” is broadly defined. It covers secondary and higher secondary schooling, vocational courses, technical courses, and recognised sports programmes. Over 57 lakh girls have been enrolled under the scheme since its launch.

How do you check Kanyashree application status online?

The official status-check tool sits at wbkanyashree.gov.in/kp_track_status.php. Here is what the form asks for:

  1. Year: Select the academic year for which you applied, for example 2025-2026.
  2. Type of Scheme: Choose “Annual Scholarship (Form K1) / Renewal” or “One Time Grant (Form K2) / Upgradation” depending on your application.
  3. Applicant ID: Enter your unique applicant number. This is the ID you received when the application was submitted at your school or institution.
  4. Date of Birth: Enter in the format dd/mm/yyyy, for example 15/08/2007.
  5. CAPTCHA: Type the security text shown in the image. Click “Change text” if the image is unclear.

After you click Submit, the portal shows your application details and the current payment status. Accepted statuses typically include “Approved”, “Payment Processed”, or “Pending at District/Block level”.

What if you do not know your Applicant ID?

The portal has a separate lookup at wbkanyashree.gov.in/kp_track_applicantid.php. This tool asks for your year, district, block or municipality, institution name, and scheme type (K1 or K2). It then returns the Applicant ID linked to your registration.

If the lookup does not return a result, the most likely causes are:

In any of these cases, go to your school's nodal officer, who has access to the institutional login and can check the backend status directly.

Why is payment showing as pending or not credited?

Even after an application is approved online, the money may not appear in the bank account immediately. Common reasons include:

Ask your school's nodal officer to check the backend approval stage. They can see exactly which level the file is stuck at.

Can you track renewal status for K1?

Yes. Every year that a K1 beneficiary remains eligible, the school must submit a renewal application. The renewal appears on the same status portal. Select the current year and choose “Annual Scholarship (Form K1) / Renewal”. Enter the same Applicant ID used in the original application. Renewal and fresh application status are both visible through the same interface.

What should you do if the portal shows "No Record Found"?

“No Record Found” usually means one of the following:

If none of these resolve the issue, the school's nodal officer can search by student name on the institutional dashboard.

Is there a mobile app for status checks?

The Kanyashree Android app is available for download from the official portal at wbkanyashree.gov.in (look for the “Download The Android App” link in the top bar). The app allows status tracking and provides general information about the scheme. However, the web portal at wbkanyashree.gov.in/kp_track_status.php works on any mobile browser and does not require the app.

FAQ

Who applies for K1 and who applies for K2?

Any girl between 13 and 18 years studying in Class VIII or above who is unmarried applies through Form K1 for the annual scholarship. Any girl who is turning 18 or has turned 18, is unmarried, and is in education or employment applies through Form K2 for the one-time grant. A girl can receive both over her school life: K1 each year she remains in school, and K2 when she turns 18.

How much money does each component pay?

K1 pays Rs. 750 per year. K2 pays Rs. 25,000 as a single transfer. Both amounts are stated on the official scheme page at wbkanyashree.gov.in. Verify the current figures on the portal, as benefit amounts are subject to revision by the state government.

Where does the money go?

The grant goes directly to the girl's own bank account by DBT. It does not go to a parent or guardian. The account must be in the girl's name and must be seeded with her Aadhaar number. If the account is a joint account, the girl's name must be the primary holder. For general guidance on DBT transfers from state scholarship schemes, see how to track scholarship status.

What documents does a girl need at the time of application?

Applications are submitted through the school or institution. Generally required documents include proof of age, income certificate issued by a competent authority, school enrolment proof, Aadhaar card, and bank account details. The unmarried declaration is also required. Your school nodal officer will guide you on the exact list.

My status says Approved but money has not come for two months. What do I do?

First check whether your bank account is Aadhaar-seeded. Then confirm with your bank that the DBT channel is active. Ask the nodal officer to check the payment reference number on the portal. If the payment shows as “Processed” on the portal but not received, raise a complaint with your bank and mention the DBT reference. You can also contact the Kanyashree helpline at 033-23373846 or write to [email protected].

Can a girl whose family income is above Rs. 1,20,000 apply?

No, unless she falls into one of the exempted categories: girls with special needs, orphans, or girls in Juvenile Justice Homes. For all other applicants, the family income ceiling of Rs. 1,20,000 per year applies strictly.

Is Kanyashree available outside West Bengal?

No. Kanyashree Prakalpa is a West Bengal state government scheme. Other states run separate girl-child benefit schemes. For Uttar Pradesh, see Kanya Sumangala status. For Bihar, see Mukhyamantri Kanya Utthan status. For West Bengal's separate women support scheme, see Lakshmir Bhandar status.

What if a girl was married early but now wants to apply?

The scheme specifically conditions payment on the girl being unmarried. An applicant who was married at the time of application is not eligible, even if she is now living separately or was married below the legal age. This is intentional, as the scheme's purpose is to prevent child marriage by creating a financial incentive to remain unmarried and in school.
