Cyber Fraud — First 24 Hours Checklist
Use this in the order shown. Tick each item as you complete it. Keep a copy with the proofs.
Step 1 — Freeze the money trail (first 30 minutes)
- Call your bank's 24×7 helpline and ask to block the card / UPI / net-banking. Note the call reference.
- Dial 1930 (Cyber Crime Helpline) and report the incident. Note the complaint reference.
- If money has left, ask the bank to raise a dispute / chargeback and to flag the beneficiary account.
Step 2 — Capture evidence (first 2 hours)
- Take screenshots of every screen you saw — SMS, app, call log, payment confirmation, error message.
- Note the exact timestamps (date + time) and the device used.
- Write a one-page incident summary while memory is fresh — what happened, in what order, who said what.
Step 3 — File the official report (within 24 hours)
- Register the case at cybercrime.gov.in (national portal). Save the acknowledgement PDF.
- If amount is significant or ongoing, visit your local police station and file an FIR / NCR. Get a stamped copy.
- Send a written email to the bank's grievance officer attaching the 1930/cybercrime acknowledgement.
Incident details (fill in)
Step 4 — Follow-up (next 7 days)
- Call the cyber-cell on the number printed on the acknowledgement. Note name + designation of the officer.
- Ask the bank for the investigation timeline in writing.
- Change all passwords, enable 2-step verification on email and bank apps.
- If a relative / elder is involved — brief one trusted family member so they can spot follow-up scam calls.
Useful numbers: Cyber Crime — 1930 · National Emergency — 112 · Bank fraud — number on the back of your card.
