Check vehicle RC status free on the official Vahan Parivahan portal with your registration number, or track a pending RC with the application number. The same record shows hypothecation. After the RTO issues the certificate, fetch the digital RC on mParivahan or DigiLocker.

People search “vehicle RC status” for three different jobs. Pick the right one before you type a number.
RC details means the vehicle is already registered. You want the live Vahan record: owner name, registration date, fuel, insurance, PUC, and whether a financier is still on the RC. You search by the registration number on the plate.
RC application status means the file is still with the RTO. That covers a new registration after purchase, a transfer after sale, a duplicate RC, an address change, or hypothecation work. You track this with the application number from the acknowledgement.
Hypothecation is not a second RC. It is the bank or NBFC note on the same certificate under Motor Vehicles Act 1988 s.51. If a loan is live, Vahan usually shows a financier name. After you close the loan, the RC does not update by itself. You file hypothecation termination (Form 35 under CMVR Rule 61) through Vahan Vehicle Related Services, then re-check the same record.
If you applied last week and still have no plate number, use application status. If the vehicle is on the road, use Know Your Vehicle Details. If you only want to know whether the loan is still printed on the RC, read the hypothecation line on that same details page.
The registering authority is your State RTO or RTA, under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Vahan is the national software. Sarathi is the sister system for licences. Do not mix the two portals. Licence tracking is on driving licence status check 2026. New licence steps sit on how to apply for a driving licence.
Motor Vehicles Act 1988 s.39 says you need a valid registration to use the vehicle on a public road. The certificate you are checking is that registration. Status lookup is free. Issue fees are what Vahan shows at checkout for your state. This page does not invent a rupee figure for a new RC.
Go to vahan.parivahan.gov.in or the umbrella site parivahan.gov.in. Confirm the address is parivahan.gov.in before you type a number. Ads and look-alike “RC check” sites are not MoRTH.
For a vehicle already on the road, open Know Your Vehicle Details. For a pending file, open Know Your Application Status from Vahan e-Services. For hypothecation addition or termination, open Vehicle Related Services, select your state, then the hypothecation option. Permit work is a different Vahan menu. Do not use the permit tracker for a private RC.
Type the full registration number as on the plate, without fancy spacing if the form rejects it. For a pending file, type the application number from the dealer slip, SMS, or payment receipt. Chassis number is sometimes asked when mParivahan or DigiLocker fetches the digital RC. Last five digits of the chassis are a common Vahan check.
Type the verification code exactly. Refresh it if the letters are unclear. Submit. Note the date and the hypothecation line. Screenshot the page. That screenshot is what you take to the RTO and what you enclose with RTI.
Open the official mParivahan app from your phone's app store, or DigiLocker. Sign in with the registered mobile. Fetch the Transport / Vahan document. A pending application will not produce a downloadable RC. Once the RTO records the certificate, the digital copy appears. Keep the same mobile that was used at registration. OTP stays on that number. Never read it out to a “helper”.
You can also keep the physical smart card if your state still posts one. Digital RC on mParivahan or DigiLocker is the copy most checkpoints now ask to see. If a private parking desk refuses the app copy, ask them to state the rule. Do not pay a cafe to “download RC” for you.
| Detail | When you need it |
|---|---|
| Registration number | RC details and hypothecation on an existing vehicle |
| Application number | Pending new RC, transfer, duplicate, or hypothecation file |
| Chassis number | mParivahan / DigiLocker fetch, or Vahan OTP login |
| Registered mobile | OTP for Vahan services, mParivahan and DigiLocker |
| State and RTO | Vehicle Related Services and any counter visit |
Exact labels differ by state. Read the line on your screen, not a blog dictionary.
| Status shown | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Submitted / Received | Vahan has the application |
| Under verification | Papers or chassis details are being checked |
| Pending at RTO | An officer or appointment is still required |
| Approved | The RTO accepted the file; printing or digital push may follow |
| Rejected / Objection | A defect is on record; fix it or re-file |
| Hypothecation added / terminated | The financier note was written or cleared on the RC |
If hypothecation still shows a bank after you closed the loan, the RC is stale. Termination is a separate application. Closing the loan account is not the same as Form 35 reaching the RTO.
Re-check Vahan after a working day. Updates are not always instant. If “Pending at RTO” does not move, take the application number to that RTO. Ask which clerk holds the file and which document is missing. Dealer-filed new registrations often stall on insurance, HSRP, or a mismatch with Aadhaar or PAN. Align the name with the same proofs you would use on how to apply for Aadhaar and how to apply for a PAN card.
If the counter has no date, use RTI. File under RTI Act 2005 s.6(1) to the Public Information Officer of that RTO / transport office. Ask for the file-movement register, the pending official, and the defect list. The PIO must reply in 30 days under s.7(1). Silence is deemed refusal. First appeal is s.19(1). Draft with the AI RTI Drafter. If day 31 comes with no reply, use the First Appeal Builder.
RTI can force a written status. It cannot print a smart card by magic, and it cannot waive a real defect. Do not ask the PIO to “approve my RC today”. Ask for the record.
For a brand-new purchase, the dealer usually files Form 20 on Vahan. Keep that dealer acknowledgement. The how-to path is how to apply for a new vehicle RC. Other citizen forms sit on how to apply guides. Sister trackers sit on status check guides.
File this under s.6(1) to the PIO, office of the Registering Authority (RTO / RTA) that has the vehicle. Enclose the Vahan screenshot. Pay the fee in your state table. Five points are enough.
Illustrative stall (not a named person). A buyer pays the dealer, Vahan shows “pending at RTO” for weeks, and mParivahan has no digital RC. Screenshot Know Your Application Status, visit that RTO with the application number, then file the five-point RTI above if the desk has no dated defect.
Open vahan.parivahan.gov.in. Use Know Your Vehicle Details with the registration number for an existing vehicle. Use Know Your Application Status with the application number for a pending file. Complete captcha and read hypothecation on the same result. The official umbrella host is parivahan.gov.in.
Parivahan RC details are the live record of a registered vehicle. Application status is the stage of a file that is still with the RTO. Details need the plate number. Application status needs the acknowledgement number. If you recently bought the vehicle and have no number yet, you are in the application-status queue.
Yes, after the RTO has issued the RC. mParivahan shows the digital certificate and usually the financier field. While the application is pending, mParivahan cannot invent a finished RC. Download the app only from the official store. Pair it with DigiLocker if one app lags.
No. RC status is whether the certificate exists and what stage a related application has reached. Hypothecation is the loan note on that certificate under Motor Vehicles Act 1988 s.51. A clear loan still needs Form 35 termination on Vahan before the financier name drops off. Check both on Know Your Vehicle Details.
There is no single national day-count on Vahan that we can treat as law. Workload and state process differ. Re-check the official portal with the application number. If the line does not move and the RTO gives no defect, use RTI under s.6(1) for the movement register.
Usually not. Digital RC on mParivahan or DigiLocker appears after the RTO approves and records the certificate. Pending means you can track the stage, not fetch the final RC. Once approved, fetch Transport / Vahan in the app or DigiLocker.
Screenshot the wrong field. Take registration number, insurance, and ID to that RTO and ask for correction through the matching Vahan service (address, name, hypothecation). If there is no action, file RTI for the correction application's status and the last noting.
Yes. Know Your Vehicle Details and Know Your Application Status on official Vahan are free. You pay government fees only when you file a service such as transfer or hypothecation termination, at the amount Vahan displays. A third-party site that charges to show basic status is not the government service.
