If you see an unknown mobile number in your name, go to Sanchar Saathi and use Know Mobile Connections in Your Name. Enter your mobile number, verify with OTP, and check the list of connections. Mark the unknown number as not mine or not required, then submit the report. Save the acknowledgement number and take screenshots. Inform your telecom operator and ask for verification of the SIM KYC. Change banking, UPI, email, DigiLocker, Aadhaar, PAN, and WhatsApp security settings. If the number was used for fraud, file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in and call 1930 only if money loss has happened.
10-minute action checklist
Sanchar Saathi is a citizen service of the Department of Telecommunications. It helps mobile users check and report telecom-related misuse.
Through Sanchar Saathi, citizens can:
The TAFCOP facility, now available through Sanchar Saathi, helps a mobile subscriber check how many mobile connections are active in their name. It also allows reporting of mobile connections that are not required or not taken by the subscriber.
Go to www.sancharsaathi.gov.in.
Use the official portal only. Do not enter OTPs on look-alike websites.
On the home page, select Citizen Centric Services.
Choose Know Mobile Connections in Your Name.
You can also open the TAFCOP page directly here: TAFCOP Know Mobile Connections in Your Name.
Enter your current mobile number.
This mobile number is used for OTP verification.
Enter the OTP received on your phone.
Do not share this OTP with anyone.
After OTP verification, the portal shows mobile connections linked to your name.
Check each number carefully. Some digits may be masked.
If a number was not taken by you, mark it as not mine or not taken by me, depending on the option shown.
If a number was taken earlier but is no longer needed, mark it as not required.
Submit the report on the portal.
Do not close the page until the request is submitted.
Save the acknowledgement number or request ID.
Take screenshots of:
Recheck Sanchar Saathi after a few days.
Do not assume instant disconnection. The telecom service provider may need to verify the report.
Do not wrongly report an old family number.
First check with family members. Old SIMs used by parents, children, spouse, staff, drivers, or office users may appear in your name.
Also check whether you took a SIM years ago and forgot about it.
Only report a number if you are sure:
Wrong reporting can create problems for a genuine user in your family or office.
Use this section if the unknown SIM may have caused serious misuse.
This includes cases where:
Do not delay if money has moved from your account. For financial fraud, speed matters.

RTI has limits in private telecom matters.
RTI cannot be used directly against private telecom operators because they are not public authorities under the RTI Act in the normal course.
You can use RTI with the Department of Telecommunications or another public authority for:
For individual SIM KYC records, do not expect RTI to get private customer records, CAF copies, CDR, or private telecom data.
For those records, use:
Do not try to obtain CDR, KYC records, or private subscriber records through unofficial channels.

Go to Sanchar Saathi, choose Citizen Centric Services, and select Know Mobile Connections in Your Name. Enter your mobile number, verify OTP, and check the list shown on the portal. If you see an unknown mobile number, report it from the same page and save the acknowledgement.
Take a screenshot first. Then mark the number as not mine, not taken by me, or the closest available option on TAFCOP. Save the request ID. Contact your telecom operator and ask them to verify the KYC. If there is fraud or money loss, file a cyber complaint.
A SIM should not be issued without proper KYC. But identity misuse can happen if documents, photos, or personal details are misused. If an unknown SIM appears in your name, report it on Sanchar Saathi and ask the telecom operator to verify the KYC records.
Do not assume instant blocking. Sanchar Saathi allows you to report a number that is not required or not taken by you. The telecom service provider may verify the report before action. Save the acknowledgement and follow up with the operator if the number continues to appear.
If there is only an unknown number and no misuse, first report it on Sanchar Saathi and to the telecom operator. File a cyber complaint or police complaint if there is fraud, OTP theft, impersonation, loan misuse, WhatsApp misuse, UPI misuse, or police/cyber cell contact.
Do not report it as fraud. Many old family, staff, driver, or office numbers may be in one person’s name. Check with family members first. If it is a genuine number but no longer needed, use the not required option instead of saying it was never taken by you.
You can ask the telecom operator to verify the KYC, CAF, activation date, outlet, photograph, and address proof. The operator may not share full private records directly. Police can seek records through lawful process during investigation.
No, RTI is not the right route to get private SIM owner details, KYC documents, or call records from a private telecom operator. RTI can be used with DoT or another public authority for policy, complaint status, or general enforcement information.
Collect the bank freeze message, complaint number, Sanchar Saathi screenshot, and cyber complaint acknowledgement. Ask the bank for the reason and reference number. File or update your cybercrime.gov.in complaint and visit the cyber police station with the evidence pack.
Pull your CIBIL report and check all loan accounts. Contact the lender in writing and deny the loan if it is not yours. File a cyber complaint and police complaint. Attach the TAFCOP screenshot, loan messages, recovery calls, and identity theft evidence.
Take screenshots of the WhatsApp misuse if available. Report the number on TAFCOP. File a cyber complaint if impersonation, fraud, extortion, loan recovery, or UPI fraud is involved. Also warn family members not to send money or documents to that account.
Check TAFCOP every few months. Also check after losing documents, changing phones, receiving suspicious OTPs, getting loan recovery calls, or noticing unknown bank, UPI, wallet, or WhatsApp activity.
