Skill India 2026 — free PMKVY training and how to join

Skill India is the umbrella mission of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Its flagship scheme is the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana — PMKVY, now in its fourth phase. The parts a citizen can use:

1. Short Term Training — a few hundred hours at an accredited training centre, ending in a third-party assessment and a certificate aligned to the National Skills Qualifications Framework.
2. Recognition of Prior Learning — for people who already have skills from work; a short assessment certifies them without full retraining.
3. Special Projects — training in non-standard settings such as employer premises or residential camps.

Courses span classic trades — electrician, fitter, retail, beauty, healthcare — and newer areas like drones, electric-vehicle maintenance and data handling. Short-term training is open to candidates roughly aged 15 to 45; exact limits vary by course, and the portal shows each one.

Register once on the Skill India Digital Hub — sidh.gov.in:

1. Create an account with Aadhaar, mobile and email.
2. Search courses or careers; shortlist a **training centre near you**.
3. Walk in with Aadhaar and a photo; the centre enrols you on the portal.
4. Attend, appear for assessment, and collect a **digitally verifiable certificate**.

One warning anchored in fact: pmkvyofficial.org is dead. The domain no longer resolves. Any site or agent still citing it — or charging a “registration fee” — is working from stale or fake information. Everything a candidate needs is free on SIDH.

A persistent chain-message claims PMKVY pays ₹8,000 as a placement reward. No such reward exists in PMKVY 4.0. Centres give placement assistance — interviews, connections, sometimes post-placement follow-up — but there is no guaranteed cash payout for joining or finishing. A centre that promises one is either confused or selling something. Free training and a real certificate: that is the deal.

1. Centre demands money: refuse, note the date, and complain — the scheme pays the centre, not you.
2. Certificate not issued after assessment: ask the centre for your assessment roll and result; then escalate.
3. Batch “pending” for months: centres sometimes hold batches open to collect milestone payments without running classes. That is fraud on the exchequer — a strong RTI topic.
4. Placement promised, never arranged: assistance is not a guarantee, but the follow-up records must exist.

NSDC and the Ministry are answerable under the RTI Act — NSDC is a government-controlled company and has been treated as answerable. If a PIO returns it, first appeal within 30 days, then the CIC under §19(3) or a §18 complaint.

1. **Centre manager in writing** — keep a dated copy.
2. **Grievance on the Skill India Digital Hub** — the portal takes complaints against centres.
3. **CPGRAMS** — lodge a public grievance with the Ministry on [[https://pgportal.gov.in|pgportal.gov.in]]; the 21-day redress clock applies.
4. **RTI** as drafted above — the one that produces monitoring reports, not assurances.
5. **Consumer forum or police** for outright fraud — your RTI reply evidences the payments made to the centre.

Real example. Kashvi Pathak of Bidar enrolled six neighbourhood girls in a retail-trade batch. The trainer appeared for two days, then the centre went quiet — but not before taking ₹500 from each girl “for the exam”. One RTI asking for the batch's monitoring reports produced an inspection the next month; the centre was flagged, and the girls were re-enrolled elsewhere free.

Yes — for the candidate. The government pays accredited centres per completed, certified outcome.

No. The “₹8,000 placement reward” message is false; there is no joining or completion cash reward in PMKVY 4.0.
