How to apply for Voter ID online 2026

You just turned 18 and want your name on the roll before the next election. Voter ID, also called EPIC, is free. File Form 6 on voters.eci.gov.in or ECINET, or hand the paper form to your Booth Level Officer. Do not pay an agent. After the Electoral Registration Officer adds your name, download e-EPIC from the same portal.

Pick the form before you create a login. The wrong form is the usual delay.

Form 6 is the new-voter path. If you already have an EPIC and only moved, use Form 8. Do not file a second Form 6 in the new city.

You qualify for Form 6 if you are an Indian citizen, you are 18 or will turn 18, and you ordinarily reside in that assembly constituency. Ordinary residence means the house where you live, not an ancestral address you visit on holidays. A student who actually lives in a hostel or rented room should use that current address and the declaration the form shows for that case. People of unsound mind declared by a competent court, and people disqualified from registration under the Representation of the People Act, 1950, cannot be enrolled.

Election Commission of India runs two citizen surfaces that do the same job: voters.eci.gov.in and ecinet.eci.gov.in. The Voter Helpline App is the mobile version of the same services: Form 6, status, BLO search, polling station, and e-EPIC. NVSP, the old National Voters' Service Portal, is no longer the place to apply. Use the two URLs above. If a search result still says “NVSP voter registration”, open voters.eci.gov.in instead.

Documents to keep ready

• Age proof, if you are using a document other than Aadhaar.
• Address proof for the house where you ordinarily reside.
• A recent photograph, as the upload screen specifies.
• Aadhaar, if you choose to give it. Aadhaar is optional for enrolment. It is often the simplest combined age and address proof.

Verb-led Form 6 steps

1. Create an account. Open voters.eci.gov.in or ecinet.eci.gov.in. Register with mobile and OTP. One login per person.
2. Choose new enrolment. Select Form 6, not Form 8. Overseas citizens choose Form 6A.
3. Fill the form. Name, date of birth, relative's name, and the address where you actually live. Students in a hostel should use the address rule the form displays for that case.
4. Upload photo and proofs. Follow the size and format shown on screen. Do not photograph a photocopy of a photocopy.
5. Submit and save the reference number. That number is how you track the file and how the Booth Level Officer finds you.
6. Watch the portal. Status sits on the same login. A longer tracker is voter ID status check 2026.

Search the roll first if you are unsure you are new. Use electoralsearch.eci.gov.in or the search tool on the voter portal. A duplicate entry is harder to unwind than a careful first Form 6.

ECI does not charge a fee at any stage. If someone at a camp asks for money to “make EPIC”, refuse and note their name.

You do not need a smartphone to become a voter.

1. Ask neighbours or the polling-station notice for the Booth Level Officer's name and mobile, or look up BLO details on the voter portal.
2. Take the paper Form 6, photo, and proofs to the BLO, or to the Electoral Registration Officer / Assistant ERO office.
3. Special enrolment camps at colleges, panchayats, and municipal offices also take Form 6.

The BLO's job is to confirm that you live at the claimed address. Be reachable. Keep a family member at home if you work during the day. If you miss the visit, call the BLO and fix a time. Offline Form 6 is as valid as the portal form. It is still free. Take a photo of the signed paper if the BLO gives you a receipt. That slip plus the portal reference is what you quote later to the ERO.

e-EPIC is the digital voter card. Once the Electoral Registration Officer approves the entry and an EPIC number exists, download it from the voter portal.

1. Log in on voters.eci.gov.in.
2. Open e-EPIC download.
3. Enter EPIC number or the Form 6 reference, as the page asks.
4. Save the PDF. Keep a copy on the Voter Helpline App as well.

e-EPIC is the card you show. A later plastic card, if your state still posts one, is extra, not a second identity. Do not wait for a postman before you treat yourself as enrolled. Check the roll search too.

This page does not invent a day count for BLO visit or ERO approval. Track the reference. If the file does not move, use the complaint option on the portal, then RTI to the ERO.

• Filing Form 6 after a shift when Form 8 was the correct form.
• Giving a hostel or rented address you have already left.
• Skipping the BLO visit, then assuming the portal will approve itself.
• Paying an agent for a free EPIC.
• Using NVSP bookmarks. Apply on voters.eci.gov.in or ECINET.
• Uploading a photo that does not match your face at verification.
• Creating a second Form 6 because the first reference looks idle.

The Electoral Registration Officer is the public authority for the roll in that constituency. File RTI under RTI Act 2005 s.6(1) to the ERO's Public Information Officer. Name your Form 6 reference, address, and the BLO if you know them. The PIO must reply in 30 days under s.7(1). If the reply is late or empty, file a first appeal under s.19(1) to the First Appellate Authority named in the PIO's reply, often at the District Election Office.

It is Election Commission's mobile app for the same citizen services: Form 6, status, BLO search, and e-EPIC. It does not replace the ERO. It does not charge a fee.

NVSP was the older National Voters' Service Portal. New enrolment now runs on voters.eci.gov.in and ECINET. If an old bookmark still opens NVSP-style pages, switch to those two hosts.

No. Use Form 8 for shifting of residence. The EPIC number can continue with the new address once the ERO accepts the shift. A second Form 6 risks a duplicate.

Yes. Form 6A is for an overseas Indian elector who has not acquired another country's citizenship. Apply through the same voter portals. Voting is still in person at the Indian polling station for that roll, unless ECI later publishes a different method.

Call the BLO number from the portal, then the Assistant ERO. Keep dates. If the Form 6 still sits unmoved, file RTI to the ERO with the reference number and the dates you were available.
