Passport stuck in police verification or print? RTI gets you a date

Direct answer. File the RTI to your Regional Passport Office (RPO) AND the SP-CID/Special Branch of the relevant district. Ask file location, PV status, reason for hold, projected dispatch date.

  • Passports Act 1967 §5 — passport must be granted/refused within 4 weeks (Rule 7 Passports Rules 1980).
  • MEA Passport Manual — 21-day police verification SLA.
  • RTI Act §6(1) + §7(1) — 30 days; if life/liberty (urgent travel) 48 hours under §7(1) proviso.
