Your route depends on what failed and where. If your fingerprint fails at the ration shop, ask the dealer to try another finger, then face authentication, then any other family member listed on the ration card. If the OTP never arrives, your linked mobile is wrong or dead; get it changed at an Aadhaar centre and use the exception route today. If a bank CSP or branch turns you away, ask the operator to record the failed attempt and offer OTP or face authentication. If failures repeat everywhere, your biometrics need updating at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, fee ₹125. A genuine beneficiary cannot lawfully be denied ration only because a machine failed; the Department of Food and Public Distribution has told states to serve such families through exception handling.
Authentication fails at the matching stage, not because your Aadhaar is invalid. The usual culprits:
You can see your own failure trail. Log in to myAadhaar and open Aadhaar Authentication History. It lists every authentication attempt, the date, the agency and whether it succeeded. Take a screenshot; it is solid evidence when you complain.
Ration dealers operate under the National Food Security Act, 2013, and state PDS control orders. Central instructions to states are clear that no eligible household should be denied foodgrain solely for Aadhaar authentication failure. In practice you can insist on, in this order:
If the dealer refuses all four, note the date and time, and complain to the District Supply Officer or the state food department helpline. Every state also has a toll-free PDS helpline, usually 1967 or 1800 series, printed on the ration card.
Banks have their own fallback chain: OTP-based authentication, face authentication, passbook plus signature at the branch, or card plus PIN. A Customer Service Point that simply says “try next week” is cutting corners. Ask the operator to record the failed transaction and give you the response code. Then go to the base branch and ask for the withdrawal over the counter. If a pension or DBT credit is what you are trying to access, the money stays safe in the account; authentication failure blocks access, not the credit itself. If your credit is going to the wrong account altogether, that is a different problem, covered in Aadhaar linked to the wrong bank account for DBT.
If failures repeat across shops and banks, book a biometric update:
For people above 70 or with disabilities, several states run doorstep biometric update camps; ask the District Supply Officer or check the state food portal.
Sukhdev, 64, a farm labourer in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, failed fingerprint authentication at his fair price shop for three consecutive months, January to March 2026. His household of five lost 25 kg of foodgrain each month, the NFSA entitlement of 5 kg per person. In April he did three things. He asked the dealer for face authentication, which worked on the second attempt, and the family drew the April quota. He filed a written complaint to the District Supply Officer asking for the three missed months, quoting his ration card number and the ePoS failure dates from his authentication history printout. And he updated his biometrics at the Aadhaar Seva Kendra in Barabanki for ₹125. The DSO ordered the dealer to issue the arrears for two of the three months from the exception quota. Total cost to Sukhdev: ₹125 and two visits. The authentication history screenshot is what made the complaint impossible to deny.
No. Central instructions under NFSA require states to serve genuine beneficiaries through alternatives, including face authentication, another family member, or the exception register. Ask for the exception entry number if grain is issued manually.
It is UIDAI's camera-based authentication on the ePoS device or an app. Most PDS machines support it now. You can ask the dealer to use it; if the device lacks it, that is a point for your DSO complaint.
Use a household member's authentication or the exception route today, then update your mobile number at an Aadhaar centre. The mobile update is part of the standard demographic charge and reflects in a few days.
₹125 at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra under UIDAI's current charge list. Children's mandatory biometric updates between ages 5 to 7 and 7 to 15 are free within the notified window.
No. The number stays the same. Only the stored fingerprints, iris and photo are refreshed, which improves match rates everywhere, including bank CSPs.
Sometimes. Put the missed months in writing to the District Supply Officer with proof of the failures. Some states allow arrears from the exception quota; others do not. The written complaint also protects you from being marked an inactive beneficiary.
Go to the base branch with your passbook and withdraw over the counter. Then complain to the branch manager about the CSP. If withdrawals you never made appear in the passbook, treat it as fraud and read the AePS unauthorised withdrawal guide immediately.
Rarely, but check. Use Check Aadhaar Validity on myAadhaar. If it shows inactive, call 1947. Deactivation usually traces to biometric updates missed in childhood, and reactivation needs a centre visit.
