Quick Reply: Check your EPF (PF) balance in 4 ways: (1) EPFO Member Passbook at epfindia.gov.in, (2) UMANG app, (3) missed call to 9966044425 from your UAN-registered mobile, (4) SMS “EPFOHO UAN” to 7738299899. To claim withdrawal, login to the EPFO Member Portal and file Form 19 (full PF), Form 10C (pension if service < 10 years), or Form 31 (advance/partial). With KYC complete, money lands in 7-15 working days. Cost: zero. If stuck more than 30 days — escalate via EPFiGMS, then RTI to your RPFC office.

Anita Reddy, 41, IT manager from Hyderabad. Resigned from her company in December 2024 after 14 years; applied for full PF withdrawal of ₹8.4 lakh in February 2025 (after the mandatory 2-month wait).
“The portal first showed 'Under Process'. Then on day 22 it said 'Rejected — KYC pending'. I called my ex-employer's HR; they said they had updated everything. I raised an EPFiGMS ticket. It was marked 'resolved' in 4 days with a one-line reply: 'kindly contact employer for KYC'. I raised another. Same reply. By day 70 I was losing sleep. A friend at her bank told me to file an RTI. ₹10 by Indian Postal Order, registered post to RPFC Hyderabad. Reply came in 25 days — neat A4 letter from the dealing assistant. The block was a PAN-Aadhaar mismatch: my PAN had 'Anita Reddy' but Aadhaar had 'Anita V Reddy' (middle initial). EPFO's auto-validator was rejecting silently and the grievance portal couldn't see this. I got the PAN corrected at NSDL (₹110, 8 days), refiled Form 19, and the ₹8.4 lakh hit my account on day 12. A ten-rupee letter solved what four grievance tickets couldn't.”
—Anita, June 2025
EPFO settles around 5 crore claims a year (Annual Report 2024-25); roughly 1 in 7 gets stuck or rejected the first time. Most rejections are silent — meaning you only see “rejected”, never the reason. This guide tells you the full process from balance check to withdrawal, and exactly what to do when the system goes quiet.
The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is governed by the EPF & MP Act 1952. Section 6 mandates the contribution (12% of basic from employee + 12% from employer, of which 8.33% goes to pension under §6A). The corpus and interest belong to you, the member, and you can:
Two months of unemployment is the default trigger for full settlement. If you join a new job before 2 months are over, you're expected to transfer the PF, not withdraw — but technically you can still withdraw if KYC permits.
For the official legal text of the Act and Schemes, see EPFO — Acts & Schemes (epfindia.gov.in). The current interest rate is 8.25% for FY 2024-25 — see our detailed breakdown at EPF interest rate 2025-26: 8.25% explained.
Your UAN (Universal Account Number) is the master ID. Get it from your salary slip, employer's HR, or by entering your member ID at https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in → “Know Your UAN”.
To activate:
For a dedicated walkthrough of UAN activation and login troubleshooting, see UAN activation and login guide 2026 and How to recover or activate your UAN.
In the Member Portal → “Manage” → “KYC”, add:
Each KYC item must show “Approved by Employer” before it's usable. Your ex-employer's HR has a portal login for this — if they're slow, follow up by email and CC the Regional PF Office (more on this in the stuck section).
If your name or date of birth is wrong in EPFO records, see How to correct your UAN name and date of birth online. For Aadhaar-related issues blocking KYC, see Aadhaar update status check 2026.
Four methods:
The portal lags by 1-2 months because employers report contributions monthly with a delay.
For more balance-check methods and troubleshooting tips, see EPF balance check 2026 — all methods and EPF PF claim status check 2026.
For detailed guides on each form, see Form 31 advance withdrawal online and Form 10C EPS pension withdrawal & scheme certificate. The updated 2026 withdrawal rules are explained in EPF Scheme 2026: new PF withdrawal rules explained.
You get a claim reference number instantly. Note it.
EPFO now offers auto-settlement of PF advances up to ₹5 lakh within 72 hours when KYC is complete and Aadhaar is authenticated. See EPFO auto-settlement PF advance ₹5 lakh in 72 hours for eligibility.
If all KYC is “Approved by Employer” and your Date of Exit (DOE) is updated, the claim goes directly to EPFO — no employer attestation. If DOE is missing (very common), the claim is stuck waiting on employer. You can:
The Regional Provident Fund Commissioner (RPFC) office where your last employer is registered processes the claim. Auto-validation runs:
If all green: claim is approved by the Section Officer → forwarded to Accounts → bank transfer initiated.
You'll get an SMS when the claim is “Settled” and another when payment is initiated. The credit shows in your bank with narration like “EPFO TRF NEFT/UTR XXXXX”.

Checking your PF balance online is free and takes under 2 minutes once your UAN is activated. Here are the four official methods, ranked by convenience:
Why does the balance sometimes look wrong or lower than expected? The passbook is updated only after your employer files the Electronic Challan cum Return (ECR) for the month, which can take 30-60 days. Also, interest for the current financial year is credited in a single lump sum at year-end (usually April), so mid-year balances may not reflect accrued interest. For the interest calculation methodology, see EPFO interest rate page (epfindia.gov.in) and our guide EPF interest rate 8.25% explained.
If your balance shows zero or missing contributions, your employer may not have deposited PF — see RTI for EPF employer not depositing.
Once you file a claim (Form 19, 10C, 31, or 10D), you can track its progress in real time. Here's how:
| Claim Status (Portal) | What It Means | What You Should Do |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | Claim has been filed but not yet picked up by the EPFO system for processing. Usually lasts 1-3 days. | Wait. If it stays “Pending” for more than 7 days, check whether your employer has approved KYC and marked your Date of Exit. |
| Under Process | EPFO has received your claim and the dealing assistant / auto-validation system is verifying details (name, Aadhaar, bank, PAN, service period). | Wait. Typical duration: 7-15 working days for auto-processed claims, up to 30 days for manual review. |
| Approved | Your claim has passed all validation checks and is forwarded to the Accounts section for payment. | Wait for payment. Money usually arrives in your bank within 3-7 days of “Approved” status. |
| Settled | The claim is fully processed. Payment has been initiated via NEFT/RTGS to your bank account. | Check your bank account. SMS with UTR number is sent. If money doesn't arrive in 5 days, check IFSC/account number in KYC. |
| Settled — Bounced | Payment was initiated but your bank rejected the transfer (wrong IFSC, closed/dormant account, name mismatch). | Update your bank account details in KYC → refile a fresh claim. This is common — fix bank details first. |
| Rejected | EPFO's validation found an error and returned the claim. Unfortunately, the reason is not shown on the portal in most cases. | File EPFiGMS grievance to get the reason, or file RTI. See PF claim rejected without reason and EPFO claim rejected — UAN/KYC complaint guide. |
| Cancelled | You or EPFO manually cancelled the claim. Can happen if duplicate claims are filed. | Refile a single, clean claim. Avoid filing multiple claims simultaneously. |
| Under clarification | EPFO needs additional information or a document from you or your employer. | Check SMS/email for EPFO's query. Respond within the given timeframe or your claim will be rejected. |
For a dedicated RTI approach to checking your claim status when the portal is unhelpful, see EPFO claim status RTI and RTI for EPF claim delayed.
The online withdrawal process is outlined in Steps 1-8 above, but here's a condensed quick-reference you can follow:
After submission: Track status using the methods above. Typical timeline:
For a step-by-step video walkthrough of the advance (Form 31) process specifically, see EPF Form 31 advance withdrawal online — India.
A rejected PF claim is frustrating but fixable. The key problem is that the portal doesn't show the rejection reason. Here's your action plan:
For detailed templates and the full RTI procedure for rejected claims, see:
If EPFO recovers money after settling your claim by mistake — they cannot do so. See EPFO cannot recover settled PF from employee for employer default.
When you change jobs, you should transfer your PF balance from your old employer's account to your new one — not withdraw it. Transfer preserves your continuous service (important for pension eligibility and TDS exemption) and keeps all your retirement savings in one place.
Auto-transfer: Since 2023, if you join a new employer who registers you on the same UAN, EPFO can auto-trigger the transfer. See PF transfer on job change — Form 13 auto-transfer for details.
If transfer is stuck or delayed beyond 30 days: File an RTI. See PF transfer delay RTI and RTI for EPF withdrawal delay 2026.
Multiple UANs? If you accidentally have more than one UAN, you must merge them before transfers work correctly. See Merge multiple UAN into one — EPF 2026.
Many people confuse these three related but distinct components. Here's a clear comparison:
| Feature | EPF (Employees' Provident Fund) | EPS (Employees' Pension Scheme) | VPF (Voluntary Provident Fund) |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Your retirement savings corpus — employee + employer contribution | Pension scheme — employer's pension contribution from the 12% employer share | Additional voluntary contribution you can make on top of mandatory EPF |
| Who contributes | Employee: 12% of basic + DA; Employer: 3.67% of basic + DA | Employer: 8.33% of basic + DA (from their 12%) | Employee only (100% voluntary) |
| Interest rate | 8.25% (FY 2024-25) | No interest (pension calculated on salary × service / 70) | Same as EPF (8.25%) |
| Withdrawal | Form 19 (full) or Form 31 (advance) | Form 10C (< 10 yrs) or Form 10D monthly pension (≥ 10 yrs) | Same as EPF — withdrawn together |
| Tax on withdrawal | Tax-free if service ≥ 5 yrs; 10% TDS if < 5 yrs (with PAN) | Tax-free lump sum (Form 10C) or taxable pension income | Tax-free if service ≥ 5 yrs |
| Maximum contribution | 12% of basic + DA (mandatory) | Capped at ₹1,250/month (8.33% of ₹15,000 wage ceiling) | Up to 100% of basic + DA |
| Governing law | EPF & MP Act 1952, §6 | EPF & MP Act 1952, §6A (EPS 1995) | EPF Scheme 1952, Para 26(6) |
Key takeaway: EPF is your main savings, EPS is your pension (capped), and VPF is a way to save more at the same 8.25% rate if you want to. For a deeper comparison of VPF with PPF, see VPF vs PPF — which is better?.

If your PF claim has been pending for more than 30 days and EPFiGMS hasn't given a substantive resolution, filing an RTI is the most effective next step. Here's the process:
To, The Central Public Information Officer (CPIO), Employees' Provident Fund Organisation, [Office Name, e.g., RPFC Bangalore] [Address] Subject: Application under Section 6(1) of the Right to Information Act, 2005 Sir/Madam, I, [Your Name], UAN [XXXXXXXXX], had filed EPF claim reference no. [XXXXXXXX] on [date] for [Form 19 / 10C / 31]. The claim status on the portal shows "[status]" since [date]. I request the following information: 1. The current status of my claim and the stage of processing. 2. The specific reason for delay or rejection, if any. 3. The name and designation of the officer handling my claim. 4. The expected date by which the claim will be settled. 5. If any document or correction is pending from my side, the exact details of what is required. I am enclosing Indian Postal Order No. [XXXX] for ₹10 as the application fee. Yours faithfully, [Name, Address, Mobile, Email]

National helpline: 14470 (toll-free) or 011-22901406 — Mon-Fri, 9:15 AM to 5:45 PM. Online grievance portal: epfigms.gov.in. For all helpline numbers, see All helplines — central & state.
EPFO's central helpline: 14470 (toll-free), or 011-22901406. Hours: 9:15 AM to 5:45 PM, Mon-Fri. Have your UAN and claim reference ready. The agent can see your claim status but cannot override technical rejections — they'll usually direct you to EPFiGMS.
File at https://epfigms.gov.in. SLA: 30 days. Choose category “Claim Settlement → Form 19/10C/31”. Attach screenshots of your claim status. Realistically, 50-60% of EPFiGMS tickets get a substantive resolution; the rest get marked “resolved” with a generic reply (like Anita's case).
App → EPFO → Grievance. Same backend as EPFiGMS but with mobile-friendly tracking.
If your claim has been pending more than 45 days, walk in to the RPFC office where your employer is registered. Ask for the dealing assistant for your account number. A polite in-person follow-up with your acknowledgement often unblocks files.
RTI works here when: your claim has been “Under Process” or rejected silently for more than 30 days, EPFiGMS has marked tickets resolved without giving you a substantive reason, or you need to know exactly which document/correction is blocking so you can fix it. The PIO must reply in writing within 30 days under §7(1) of the RTI Act.
RTI does NOT directly help when: your employer has stopped depositing PF altogether (different problem — see RTI for EPF employer not depositing), or you simply have not completed Aadhaar-PAN-bank seeding (the RTI will tell you to do that first).
For the full template (with copy-ready text, the ₹10 IPO instructions, and what the RTI reply usually looks like), see RTI for stuck PF withdrawal — already published, comprehensive.
For employer-side issues like non-deposit of contributions, see RTI for EPF employer not depositing.
For disputes that EPFO has wrongly decided (e.g., wrong assessment of dues, illegal recovery), you can approach the EPF Appellate Tribunal under Sections 7-I or 7-A of the EPF & MP Act. See EPF appeal — 7A, 14B, Appellate Tribunal, Section 7I.
If someone contacts you offering to “help” withdraw your PF for a commission, or if you suspect your PF was withdrawn fraudulently by someone else, see EPFO PF withdrawal fraud recovery — India.
If you haven't added a nominee to your EPF/EPS account, your family will face enormous difficulty claiming the corpus in case of your death. Update your nomination online — see EPF e-nomination — add/update nominee via UAN. For the death claim process without a nominee, see EPF death claim without nominee — legal heir process.
Q. Can I withdraw my entire PF the day I resign?
No. For full Form 19 settlement you must wait 2 months from your last working day (this is to confirm you remain unemployed). For Form 31 advance (housing/medical/marriage/education), no waiting period.
Q. I'm joining a new job — should I withdraw or transfer?
Transfer is strongly recommended. Continuous service builds your pension (Form 10D eligibility at 10 years) and avoids TDS. Transfer is one-click on Member Portal once KYC is complete.
Q. What if my employer never updates Date of Exit?
Login → Manage → “Mark Exit” → enter DOE yourself. This has been allowed since 2021 and works without employer involvement.
Q. The portal shows “Settled” but money isn't in my bank.
Check the IFSC and account number in your KYC. If bank account is dormant or closed, the credit bounces back to EPFO and the claim status changes to “Settled — Bounced”. You'll need to update bank KYC and refile a new claim.
Q. Can I withdraw PF if I'm relocating abroad permanently?
Yes — under Para 69(1)(b) of the EPF Scheme. No 2-month wait. You'll need to attach a copy of your visa/work-permit + bank a/c (Indian or NRO).
Q. How much TDS will be cut from my claim?
If your service is 5 years or more — zero TDS on PF withdrawal (no income tax). If less than 5 years and claim is above ₹50,000 — 10% TDS (with PAN), 34.6% (without PAN). Form 15G/15H submitted at filing makes it zero if you're below the basic exemption limit.
Q. I forgot my UAN password — how do I reset?
Member Portal → “Forgot Password” → enter UAN + Aadhaar-linked mobile → OTP → set new password.
Q. Can I check my PF balance without internet?
Yes — give a missed call to 9966044425 from your UAN-registered mobile, or send SMS “EPFOHO UAN ENG” to 7738299899. Both work on any basic phone.
Q. My employer has two UANs for me — what do I do?
You must merge them into one. Go to Member Portal → “One Member – One EPF Account” or see our guide: Merge multiple UAN into one — EPF 2026.
Q. How long does an auto-settled PF advance take?
If your Aadhaar is authenticated, KYC is complete, and the claim is under ₹5 lakh for advance (Form 31), EPFO's auto-settlement system processes it in under 72 hours. See EPFO auto-settlement guide.
Q. Is EPF interest taxable?
EPF interest is tax-free up to ₹2.5 lakh per year in contributions (Budget 2021, Rule 9D). Contributions above ₹2.5 lakh/year earn taxable interest. See EPF interest taxable above ₹2.5 lakh — Rule 9D.
Q. What is the current EPF interest rate for FY 2025-26?
The rate is 8.25% for FY 2024-25 (notified by the government; credited in April 2025). For FY 2025-26, the rate is typically announced by February 2026. See EPF interest rate explained.
Q. Can I withdraw PF for buying a house or flat?
Yes, under Para 68B of the EPF Scheme — Form 31 advance for housing. You can withdraw up to 90% of your PF balance (including employer share) if you're buying or constructing a house. The property must be registered in your or your spouse's name.
Q. My PF was withdrawn by someone else fraudulently — what do I do?
Immediately call EPFO helpline 14470, file a police FIR, and file an EPFiGMS grievance with the FIR copy. See EPFO PF withdrawal fraud recovery — India.
Q. Can I get my EPS pension from any bank branch after retirement?
Yes — EPFO's Centralized Pension Payment System (CPPS) allows EPS pensioners to draw their pension from any bank branch in India. See EPFO CPPS — EPS pension from any bank branch.
